Cookies are pieces of information generated by a Web server and stored in the user's computer, ready for future access. Cookies are embedded in the HTML information flowing back and forth between the user's computer and the servers

The main purpose of cookies is to identify users and possibly prepare customized Web pages for them. When you enter a Web site using cookies, you may be asked to fill out a form providing such information as your name and interests. This information is packaged into a cookie and sent to your Web browser which stores it for later use. The next time you go to the same Web site, your browser will send the cookie to the Web server. The server can use this information to present you with custom Web pages. So, for example, instead of seeing just a generic welcome page you might see a welcome page with your name on it.

Adware SE Personal, HijackThis, and SpyBot are all great programs to use on a regular basis. Spybot and Adaware will take care of most of the problems but HJT is the more powerful of the 3. If you're going to use HJT, get someone who knows how to read the log file to advise you before "fixing" anything as you could render your computer useless. A net search for Adaware and Spybot will lead you to the free downloads.

If you're using XP, cleaning out your prefetch folder and turning off a few unneeded services will also help you speed things up. XP is a resource hog for sure.
