My 1005 miller has 6 side vines in the first 7 inches of growth. The main stem is verticle with these side runners. Its hard to tell which one is the back runner! My question is do i cut these off close to the main stem,in which i would have to bury the complete stem to cover? Or do you cut them back 12 inches or so?

You have to watch the plant to see which of those vines is the strongest. Don't cut anything off that close to the stump until you're sure it's wasting energy. I'm always concerned about insects and diseases getting in through any opening. Last year I buried the stump and it almost rotted in July. I had better luck when the stump was in fresh air. Greg

Thank you Greg for the advice. This plant is three times the size of five others i planted at the same time. Im sure I will do a little pruning but will follow your advice and give it some time. Thanks again,
