Yep, that's a snake alright. From the looks of it, I would say it belongs to the "racer" family. I don't know what types of snakes you have in California, but that looks similar to what we call a blue racer around here. It's a pretty harmless snake, unless you're a small rodent or bird. Good mouse catchers.

ps they are found under ground only ,when i dig weird -but very cool looking in person !!

I have a wildlife book here and it looks like a blind snake. There's a few different kinds, and the book says they like to burrow underground. But it looks like that legless lizard too.

I use to collect those as a kid and always called them legless lizards. California legless more specifically.
