I was checking my un-opened female flower's and pumpkin's today. I noticed that one or two pumpkin's are soft even before the flower was open. I thought the female flower opened and if the plant did not receive pollen then it went soft. Why is it soft at this point? It's like it never had a chance? Also, these pumpkins are a more yellow color then the other one's that made the grade. Whatzz up!

Sounds like the plant was aborting it.

Why would the female abort before the flower opens?

Sometimes the females will abort because something about the plant trying to grow and survive is not in balance or something is causing stress to the plant during growth and to put all the energy into the plant surviving it will abort female growth. Sometimes things like fertilizing at the wrong time, to much water or not enough water will cause aborts. PLANT STRESS! Just the plant trying to do what it is supposed to do, live and multiply.

my only hopeful comment...have you been working out? don't know your own strength? i am not joking all THAT much; i do not yet have any females to check like this. i would say go ahead and pollinate them just like normal, if they blossom, unless there are others that are definitely a lot more firm. eric
