I like shade cloth best, I used an elaborate misting system a couple seasons ago and in order to be effective it overwatered the plants. I think I have some photos and stuff in my diary from like 2001 or some season close to that. I agree with Tom, protect them a little then they will toughen up.

I agree with Tom and Gad's. I had an elaborate mister. The result to much water requiring to much baby sitting for me. Several fine coaches advised me to get out of misting. I did.

I agree to let them harden up, as they do seem to. but at same time i disagree about misters (so far) as they realy make leaves perk up in 5 miniuts & yes they are watered plenty! as weather has been cool for a while & were not used to 95 as its been for last 3 days, leaves stay in better shape & i belive plant growes faster when not as much stressed!therefore ill pollinate earleyer & farther out < and pumpkin will be on a plant later in season with more to push it !im very happy with my misters!!,5 stations devoted to misters 99 min ea .they run continusly from 10:30---5:30

maybe if your climate was humid a lot then i dont know, but if you figure 20 mister heads cover my 2000 sq ft (not compleatly) they use one half gal per hr ea, X 20 =10)X 7 hrs,= 70 gals. for all day cost for water aprox 25 cents a day & most evaporates doesent over water at all!!

unless you see 110 F in summer then i would not worry about misting... anything up to 92-95 f I would lean towards using cloth. the only folks that really need to think of shade cloth or misting are usually below the 40th lattitude.

Here we need to have a cover and misters I just got my 3rd hailing on this season with brutal 90- 100 degree heat in the mornings before the hail hits...lol mist in the morning when the plants are burning, then brace for the hail in the late afternoon..We are due for more severe hail here today this afternoon..Not to mention the severe wind....Bracing myself for another round, AS just 1 mile east of my patch got 15 inches of hail out of yesterdays storm,( snowplows and fire engines called out ) and I was lucky with just a pea size dusting..temps went from 91 to 58 in a matter of 10 minutes...such is the life of growing in colorado....JK..

I know I'm above the 40th but because I grow in greenhouses, I do get extremely high temperatures, above 100 degrees, even with fans, I used shade cloth so far and it seems fine. It sure is strange how certain plants love the heat, 845 Bobier, 1260 Weir, and 842 Eaton, and the 846 Calai seems to be having the hardest time with the heat.

I use misters on one plant and shade cloth on another. I like shade cloth better because the leaves seem to stay in better shape and last longer than leaves that are misted. On the other hand, misting works much better for cooling down the plant. It's a toss up.

said it before and I will say it again... if you use misting you must use a systemic fungicide .....period.the huge invitation to PM is only allowed by people who do not follow the advice. period.

I show no difference with my plant with pm, whether misted or not in san diego. Shade is what gets it going here.
