Why is it when most of the people in the states have a plant going that is out about 15 feet,Canada's plants seem to be around 2 feet and when we have a pumpkin around 200 pounds Canada is just pollinating theirs. How is it that they catch us so quickly?? I never could figure that out because it seems Canada winter months are longer. Why is it there pumpkins grow so fast in just a 3 week period to catch our pumpkins we have growing then pass us in the fourth week, lol. WHY???????lol

It could be that if they are at a higher lattitude, they get more daylight for growth. I know from experience that northern Minnesota gets close to an extra hour of light in both the morning and evening when compared to east-central Iowa.

There are many other countries with cold and long winter periods, but then around June suddenly it´s summer (a REAL one lol) and everything is done in 3 months. It´s always amzing to see that.

Brooks, since no Canadians have given a hypothesis yet, I thought I'd see if you could expand your question geographically. As you well know, Canada is a huge land mass with several climatic zones. Growing in British Columbia (very short winter) simply cannot be compared to growing in Northern Ontario (still living in Igloos and driving a dog sled) In BC, we have a very long growing season so there is no need to be in any kind of rush.

Generally higher latitude soils also retain a larger percentage in ORGANIC MATTER(OM) over the winter months than southern climates. Natural, native USA soils fall between 3 and 5% OM with the upper levels found mostly in the North west, East & Midwest to the Great Lake States. I believe larger weight gains are easier to accomplish in highly organic soils approaching 20% OM. Therefore the northern grower has extra sun light and extra nutrient holding capacity. All this provided by a slower decay rate of the OM and a explosion of beneficials as the soil warms up.

Of course Stan is going by what the paper says, because we don't actually see the sun very often here in Washington.

Well, Erin, you're correct! This Spring we have had a grand total of five(5) nice days in the past three months. I am sick of all this rain! We had some "rolling thunder" and downpours today!
