I was wondering how molasses one should use and how to apply it. Foilar, drench or both and how often to apply.

What does the molasses do for the pumkin?

From what I understand, molasses feeds the good bacteria and they kill or out compete the bad bacteria. Thus enabling the transfer of the good nutrients in the soil and or compost in your patch. I make aerobic compost tea 55 gallons at a time. I add 24 ounces of blackstrap molasses to the tea. I also add 40 lbs of composted cow manure, 40 lbs of fresh alpaca manure, 20 lbs of dirt from the compost pile, 1/2 gallon of neptunes fish, and 1 pint of seaweed extract. I use this as a drench and foliar.

Search this site with the word (Molasses). There have been many posts, on the subject, of molasses.

I use two ounces, of molasses, per gallon, of spray material, per weekly foliar application including some run off, to soil, which would be a light drench too.

Yep 2 ounces per gallon here also...The Molasses actually works in three ways. One it increases the Brix level of the plant. A higher Brix level is less desirable to pests. They seem to like the bitter less healthy plants. Two it acts as a foliar with the micronutrients. Molasses is the base ingredient of a few organic fertilizers. Three it provides carbohydrates to the microorganisms. We have seen a huge decrease in the Cucumber Beetle population since we started using it 4 years ago. Then the added bonus it seems to help cut the fish smell from the fish and kelp.

Will the molasses attract ants?

LOL @ Shannon's fish kelp and molasses comment as to smelling better. I never mixed a batch yet I thought I would like to pour over a short stack.

Incidently the Brix if up as high as nine or ten is said to support the total growth and cause added weight. Someone I trust said two ounces a gallon per week would get that aproximate result. Just wet the leaves and let a little run off to ground.

Yes it may attract ants but not the kind that will cause you any trouble.

I been trying the molasses this year too, and everything you guys are sayin is right on. There are cuke beetles in all of my neighbors garden's but not mine. The plants also look to be some of the healthiest ones I've ever grown. I'm gonna keep on using it, seems to be workng good. Mike
