We have secondary vines growing every 8 or 10 inches on our one main vine that is about 101" long. I thought about terminating every other pair of secondaries but some of them are up in the air, some of them are laying on the ground. Some of them so far have roots growing into the ground. I wanted to know if someone thinks that I should still trim every other one or should I let them grow and just terminate them after say 10 ft or so. Help sure would be appreciated.

I would trim them out so that I could get in to remove the mass of growth that is about to grow, from all those secondaries.

Your position is, of one who is about, to look out there and see nothing but a jungle, of unmanageable vines, going every way but neat.

pruning every other is your chioce

usually we just prune out a secondary here and there if its to close to another
then we train the sides so that they are a couple feet apart

we also train the the first set of sides we keep to run 90 degrees from the main then after 8 to 10 ft we run them toward the back of the plant a bit ( saves space to )

Our first set of secondaries grew backwards at about a 45 degree angle. A backward Christmas tree I guess. Did you ever see them growing like that? So trim them and bury the ends? Some are at 4 ft. Some shorter.

Here is what Al said in the GVGO interview.

Did you bury and prune your vines? If so, give us a few details.

I grew the plant in an Xmas tree layout but took the first secondary vine on each side out at 135 degrees from the main vine, not 90 degrees as in a standard Xmas tree.

Thanks, should I trim them as soon as possible? Should I wait? There are quite a few buds for male flowers and two for female. Guess I should bury the ends when I do cut them?

Prune off all the terciary buds and leave those male buds for pollinating, Doc is correct pinch them while there small or the plant will spiral out of control and waste much weight on "salad".

Sorry for all the questions. Where should I trim the secondary vines? Close to the main or perhaps several feet out?

Let the secondaries run out ten to twenty feet. Bury them. When one reaches the end of your patch space terminate (cut) it and bury it.

All that understory or under canopy growth is an excellent brooding location, for all kinds, of insect and pathegon trouble.
