Congratulations Shawn King (Kano)on your day 30 - 365lb est.!!! Every day you wake up and you have a new personal best! And to top that off, every day you have the new Arkansas state record sitting on the vine growing at almost 30 lbs a day. Man right now you are living the season most of us can only dream of having. The only way to top it off would be to grow what may be considered the "Southern" record. Anyone know what would be considered the southeren record right now? Keep her together Shawn and you will finish the season with results much better than your wildest dreams. Are you sure your a rookie? Your doing a FANTASTIC job. Best of luck! Mike Frantz

I guess it depends on what you would consider the south. My opinion is that Tim Herring's 913 is the biggest in the South.
I believe the key in the South is to keep your plant very healthy and treat for bugs and disease before they arrive. Fast starts are very common down here and so are slow finishes . Last year my largest was 112" in circumference by day 30 but was finished growing by late August. I don't think I've ever had a pumpkin put on any significant weight in September and I think other southern growers have experienced the same thing.
I will be watching Kano hoping he will figure out the solution to this problem! If he does he will be my new best friend:)

I was not aware of KYGROWER's 1028.5. That is truly impressive....where was it weighed?
Doug14, I would consider KY in the South.
Water, I'm assuming the funny flag is the Confederate flag. It is usually only flown in movies about the South so that the yankee and left coast movie makers can perpetuate the stereotypes of backward and racist Southerners. I guess we are one of the last groups that can be picked on without fear of violating the mores of PCness.
If you ever get a chance to visit the South I think you will find it beautiful, and aside from the many pockets of New York and "Jersey" transplants, very friendly too:)

And if we can't pick a Jury, we can dang sure pick a good tree.
Good looking pumpkin Kano. Have you figured out what the leaf problem is? I have a few leaves showing similar symptoms. At the moment, I am chalking it up to heat, since I have seen no insects at all.

Thanks everyone! But we haven't hit the scales yet, there's still time for catastrophe. I am hoping the leaf problem doesn't kill the plant before we get some more weight out of the deal. I still don't know whats going on with my leaves. Yeah Mike, I am a rookie for sure, and made plenty of rookie mistakes to back it up, kinda like a 16 year old in a Ferrari. I would like to have seen what a REAL grower could have done with this seed. My hat's off to you KYgrower, that's a lot of pumpkin!

Whinining about "yankees" is as silly as talking about funny flags! Becides,,,the question came from Arniefornia.
Be very aware,,,lots of Christians around the "south",, good thing.
"old south" is still in existance in the "south" So be careful how you run your mouth.
America has only one flag.
Sorry,,too much sun in the patch....best of luck kano.

America has one flag but its funny how many times we still act divided. You can see it in this thread! With the way people relocate so much anymore im surprised there is still such seperation. Hey I think the south is a BEAUTIFUL country....ooops...not a seperate country but I should have said a beautiful part of OUR country...ROFLOL! I have a bank account in Atlanta Georgia and when I call down there and listen to the teller (female) on the phone with her southern accent it just melts my heart. Now I have talked to Shawn on the phone and he has an accent.... it doesn't do anything for me...THANK GOD.... but I bet if he put his wife on the phone her voice would cut through my heart like a hot knife through butter!!!! Hey good idea... Shawn next time we talk I want to talk to the wife!!!
