As of today, I have my plants in their pots 7 days since the start of soaking. The first true leaf is maybe 1/2" at most.

How long do I have before I MUST transplant in order to keep from damaging the potential?

I want to be able to keep them in their pots as long as possible in order to determine which ones will be the best for my nice summer heat.

Ben,

I've started plants then moved them into larger pots with little incident. However the premium competition plants should go into the ground as soon as the first true leaf shows you the way.

It is time to put that seedling in the patch right now.

It is already crowding a four inch pot and a tall half gallon ice cream box will be to small in about two more days.

If it is blistering hot shade it for a week after you plant it. Set a lawn chair or something similar over it.

I gave a few plant to people at work, they were already in the 12" deep pots for over a week, and most of these people didn't plant for at least another week, and a couple of them waited 2 weeks, so far havn't heard of any dying. I planted some corn seeds into VERY tiny 6 pack plastic containers that you buy plants in, I didnt plant them for 3 weeks,,,,I think they are going to make it, the roots occupied the bottom of the containers. LOL, plants can take a beating.

"Plants can take a beating" You are correct but the object is, to grow any plant from seed to fruit, with the least stress possible.

If you seek the larger fruit the less stress the better. Pot binding is the second or third form of stress created by those who have not discovered this truth. I do not believe this statement is opposed by any good grower.
