My stump on my 950 boyton is starting to rot:( The stump is huge, plant is almost 2 months old, just setting fruit this coming week. It was mushy on one side of the stem at the base of the stump in a couple areas. I scraped out the mush (1/4 inch deep) sulfer pasted like crazy. Came back today (my patch is not at my house), and the sulfer paste is all wet over the rotted area. I could feel a slight softness again in a spot or too. Over all the stump is still hard in most places.
I'm afraid this rot is spreading and I'm gonna lose the stump? Any extreme emergency advice? Never had stump rot in 5 years growing, use over head watering. I had the stump area cover with a plastic tarp a few inches over it to keep it dry but doesn't seem to have helped. One thing I don't get, the sulfer paste turns a darker brown in places after applying it. Not sure if it's just moisture or what. A fan is out of the question since I'm growing at a neighbors house and use over head watering. bummed out on this one. Should I try to cut off half of my stump in an extreme action to stop the rot or maybe that wouldn't stop it either. Anyway, open to any drastic suggestions:) jimmy

anyway to only put the fan on at night when the overhead system is not in use? might be a pain in the ass putting it on the plant every night as soon as the watering system goes off until an hour before using the watering again or take it the fan off first thing in the morning before going to work. if you do fan, make sure you and your neighbor know that the spicket is closed for safety purposes so the water will never go on when the fan is out there. besides that, cover with a tarp high enough to block the watering system droplets and also allow as much ventilation under he tarp as possible. remove any windbreaks around the area if you have them up to allow more air flow. 10% bleach water and a soft brsuhed toothbrush can be used to clean the area before dressing with captan again. this is all i can think of brother.

Sounds like Fusarium. Thiophante-methyl (Topsin-M, Cavalier, Cleary's 3336, T-Storm, etc) might have prevented it & might even check it to the point you can finish with a fruit. Start drenching & spraying NOW.

.........and consider turning off the overhead watering except for once a week additive working with the actual local knowledge and what mother gives you.
.........There are facts and result records available for anything we put in our patches. Many considerations are important before adding any harsh chemical, to the soil.
.........One of those considerations is the use of StorOx as sold by Fertrell. It is a safe product and it works immediately. It adds no poison to the existing soil. It provides no chance for mutational resistance. It biodegrades nicely into the contents of water and leaves no residule. Fertrell representatives can tell you or you can read in the catalog how this product works.
I have talked, to those who have used this product, on other crops. I was impressed enough, to use it as a prevent program. This is a product very much worth your consideration.

I had the same issues last year including the 950.4. Tried sulfer and scraping but that did't help. The only success I had was cutting into the good part of the vine a little to remove the rot. I had only one side of my vine but the plant continued to grow. The 950.4 was lost by just scraping and using sulfer. Good luck I hope you can beat it.

pack sum sulfer or captans on it Ben,maybe this will dry it out a bit. I started to get a mushy stump last year and all I had at that moment because it was Sunday evening was Ortho garden and disease control (daconil),I packed this on thick and it worked.

duster, i am by no means an expert, this is my first year, BUT as someone else pointed out you must scrape into the good meat, to make sure you got out all of the bad stuff, same goes for humans, when they take out cancer, or gain green(sp)
Good luck

I've cut into the vine with a razor, think I got all the bad stuff out, bleached it, sprayed immunox, and sulfer pasted and cleaned out the stump area and opened up my wind break. Now I pray!!!:) Thanks for the advice. Jimmy
