have planted the 723 and 1260 and one has to go. 1260 is by far the best plant 10 ft out and 2 foot secondaries. 723 was a slow starter had a club root but is picking up speed at 4 ft main but puny secondaries. given the history of the 723 is by far a better seed but the 1260 is pretty good also. so i will take a poll to see which one you would keep and which one to cull. my second plant will be the 842 for you genetic guys. drew

The 1260 has been prone to splitting, I've heard. But I'd probably still go for the 1260, and hope for a monster that holds together. A 1260 X 842 sounds like a very good genetic cross. If you want a better chance at an intact pumpkin at the end of the season, you may want to go with the 723. My vote though is for the 1260, but it's ultimately your choice.

WTF drew! LOL I say 723 because you tend to have fast growing fruit and the 1260's I know of that grew fast all split. Then again, 10 ft as compared to 4 ft is quite the dilemma.
I say dont listen to anyone here, and go with your gut

When you're culling one, be sure you don't step on the other one.

Drew, Looking at it from an impassionate view, you have a 50% chance of making the right decision. Then again with my luck, a vine borer would destroy the remaining plant next week! :>(

What you might want to consider is how many 1260 & 723 seeds are still around and obtainable to plant in the future. If I were to guess I would say there are more 1260's left than 723's but I'm just guessing.
If it was me I would grow the 723.

Personally I'd keep the 723. But I'd figure out a way to move that 1260 even if it meant losing significant roots. It might still be a pollen donor.
723 x 1260 or 842 x 1260 don't sound too bad.

Drew Move the house and extend the patch. Then you can grow them both. I would actually go with the 723 because of past records. As Tom B said the 723 has a better track record. also the 723 X 842 is a nice cross, I think better than the 1260 X 842. But on the other hand, LOL. My vote is 723 with reservations!! Eddy

Drew, tough call. If the 723 had a club root, I would avoid that if at all possible. If the 1260 is doing good I'd keep it. A risky call but we'd never get anywhere if we didn't take risks. Adam

Any plant diseased with club root is a poor risk. It should be dug out and as many of the roots burned as is possible.
A plant with the known vigor of the 723 can give you the illusion of getting well while a significant part of it may well be spewing forth clubroot spores as the host plant to clubroot.

Drew, Do you have close to each other? or are they at opposite ends of the patch. I would let them both grow. Limit the room that the backup eventually gets and use it as the pollinator. You must have a bit more room in your backyard. If not let it grow over the fence.

Sometimes those puny plants can produce...but hate to pull a healthy plant with good potential. Tough call...if the 723 is growing well now though, I guess I'd go for that one.
What would you do if it was 723 vs. 1097 Beachy (that's the choice I'm going to have to make!)? -- Chris

Yikes. When you planted these silver bullets, did you know there would come a day when you had to "pull" one of them? That "I-have-842-and-898-same-place-what-to-pull" discussion is always ridiculous and I really don´t understand why people do that, it´s just a waste of good seeds. Nothing wrong about a backup strategy but not this way. Anyway it´s a good idea to dig one plant out and move it to another spot or grower before "pulling" it :)

I wouldn't call it a waste of seeds. I'd call it grower's choice. It'll be a heartbreaker to pull either one, but, hey, survival of the fittest. Given that they are both highly proven, and both heavy on the late starting Lloyd genes, I'd go with your gut on what plant looks better. From your description, I'd keep 1260. Good luck with it. i'd keep the 723. more of a rarity, statistically better producer, and actually, i'd probably rather have a 4 foot plant right now. i have a feeling that you might be polinating a little too early (if you worry about such a thing) if our nice weather holds on and these things continue to grow at an optimum rate.

I don't know Andy. Drew likes to set 'em way out there, if I recall. 1260 would put him on track for 20-25 ft in the golden zone...
