I just read an earlier post about what growers are using to hold down vines with. Is there now a trend to NOT burry vines and just hold them down with , coat hangers, chop sticks or whatever? I thought buried vines = more root = increased ability of plant to feed itself = bigger fruit....among other things.

No... We bury the vines after the secondaries have formed. If you bury a vine to soon it will stop your secondaries from emerging. Stake then bury

I don't bury the main vine and use whatever I have to hold it down untill secondaries are long enough to bury and securely hold the plant down and increase the root structure.

In some cases burying can cause the vine to rot. I think that's why some growers don't bury any more or only mound the leaf nodes but not the whole vine...

martin
you are correct that a buried main can become diseased and or rot if left buried for the season
what we do is bury early on because it does benefit the rooting system and makes it difficult for borers to get in
we go back and uncover the main and a few feet of each side around the begining of august

Like Martin I bury nodes mostly. However some folks bury vines for Squash Vine Borer protection as much as to encourage adventitious rooting. Grower with heavy soils sometimes avoid burying to avoid soil born vine rots like Fusarium or Rhizoctonia.

I bury the vines as soon as I can do so without covering the emerging secondary. I've never had a problem with a rotting main vine and the roots that develop are amazing.

I bury my mains completely. However don't over water if you use this approach. With the correct amount of moisture the main should be OK if it is buried.
