I've read that some of you remove the first set of secondaries to "open up the stump". Why do you need to open up the stump area? Do you have poor draining soil, or is there another reason?

Its choice I guess Doug. Jack LaRue takes off his first two secondaries and look what he ended up with last year, but yet Al Eaton lets his first two secondaries grow and he ended up with a 1446. I myself am going to try to leave as many leaves before the fruit as I can this year because last year I found myself needing them newer leaves coming off the stump to replace my older tired and worn leaves to keep energy to my fruit going.

Thanks Brooks. I think I'll go the middle road, and leave the first set, and remove the next, as I'll likely prune off every other secondary. We'll see.
