Well it's been a whirlwind this summer - just too much going on to get my diary going - but I'll do it today!!!

As to our big GP project.. Had a lot go against us! The first crop (started in 1G pots in Feb..) Got hit by record late frosts and a major pest swarm. Few survived. Our final crop - direct sown - those that germinated are generally doing well..Even though we are now 3" in rain deficit - prepping the garden with much 'hay mulch' to prepare for a 'drought year'.

Here's a list of 'survivors' that are thriving: 360 Moore, 572 Moore X2, 572 Bosworth X3, 625 Foss X2, 865 Foss X2, 610 Garrell, 625 Foss, 275 Glover..... Here's the ones just hanging in there: 507 Wolfely, 640 Mudd, 640 Mudd, 3 A.G., 1 Prizewinner....

Here's some lessons I've already learned:

Don't seem to transplant well - no matter how careful you are!

Do NOT use Permethrin pesticide on them! Seems to kill the plant as well as the bugs! Seven dust works better on the young plants - systemic on bigger plants - put seven dust on them as soon as leaves are up!!!!

For germination - 'Private seeds' seem to germinate more readily after being soaked in Hydrogen Peroxide. When I 'tested' both commercial seeds and Private seeds with this - private seeds 'fizzed' a lot whereas Commercial seeds did not. Indicates Private seeds have a lot of bacteria/fungi on their coat. Interestingly, NONE of the Commercial seeds germinated after H.P. soak - although I had 90% germination on non-soaked commercial seeds.

Leads me to think the commercial seeds were 'treated' somehow, and perhaps this 'treatment' interacts with the HP in a bad way... Suprising that none would germinate after soaking in Peroxide, perhaps it calls for a retest...
