I have a 1230 Daletas which has about a 5 foot main, which is flat vining, but not really seeming to do anything else strange. Some of the secondaries are flat, some are normal. About 3 feet from it I have a backup growing, my own 500 Pugh (805 Pukos x 845 Bobier...the 845 grew my 873.5 on less than 200 square feet of plant) which should grow a darned nice pumpkin. The 500 has about a 3.5 foot long main vine (it was started about a week after the 1230). Do I go with the 1230 which is maybe a little bit wierd, or my own 500 which looks normal? That is the question. What do you think?

Keep the 500. Have confidence in your homegrown seed.

If the plants are not crowding each other then I would take a wait & see approach. A few more weeks of growth could prove to be interesting. If one has to be culled immediately I would go with my gut and probably choose the 500.

Yesterday the 1230 started to go double about 6 feet out. That, plus everyone's encouragement to "grow my own" answered my question. I got out my knife and cut through the nice, fat, two and a half inch stump of the mutating 1230. Then I looked over at my 500 Pugh that was waiting in the wings and smiled because I knew that I had done the right thing. This is why we grow backup plants...and if your backups are your own seeds, it is a great way to try one of your own.

just had the same dilema here russ, except mine happened twice. now i have 2 of my own growing in my patch and i am excited like a little kid to finally see what my own seeds will do. they are tough decisions to make at the time, but you do get a different feeling watching your own plants grow. its hard to describe the feeling--but its there and it puts a little smile in the eyes everytime you see the plants.
