You should still be ok Burrhead. The warmer climate will help you into late september. No problems for you to reach 500+.

Theres a chance you'll get something decent but I dare to say not the way it seems you've been taking care of them so far. I hate to be the pessimist, the wet blanket etc, but where's your wind protection? Where's the frost protection? Where's the Burrhead protection? 20 is alot and sh%t happens but can you take major care with say, just 1 or 2 plants...? I'm talking anal preventative "I'm prepared for anything care"...anything you see posted here can happen to you (you have mooses?)...and with a late start its already happened to someone here and been posted so you must learn from it and be one step ahead. You need to get a bit more serious or comprehensive in your punkin tending if you want something...its up to you .

Heck I was getting worried in the 3rd week in May when temps started to get really low at night with allot of rain that on may 29th I took 2 seeds and just directly poped them into the garden about 2 ft away from my other plants just in case, Ya its kinda late but if i was going to lose my main plants i at least wanted some back-ups. good news is my plants made it out ok, once the new young plants sprout i'll leave em be till july then snip them off.

lipumpkin: sorry i ruffled youre feathers but here is the answers to youre questions after the third time of picking up my hoop houses from violent thunderstorms that ran threw here and destroyed all but one hoop house i said the heck with that idea you see that is why as you say im not serious about my growing maybe 20 may be alot for some but i had reasons for trying so many which i will not get into here all be it i will say this most if not all of my pumpkins i get this year if i get any will go to a good cause here in my home community yes it is for kids as for being serious about my growing i have busted my hump getting my soil up to par organically ive spent a good amount of money on seeds and traded or received excellent seeds from many good growers along with asking so many questions from experienced growers that i figure alot of em are tired of talking with me and as for do you have mooses here in west virginia we have had so much rain and hail in the last three weeks i dont think a m1 abhrams tank could have been alot of help so im sorry i cant control mother nature and im sorry i asked another question that has allready been asked i thought that is how you learn when you wasnt here when the question was asked first! anyway everybody im sorry if this is a little off color but ive put my heart and soul into my pumpkins and i wont be accused of being to stupid or lazy to take care of em once again im sorry for spouting off but sometimes you have to burrhead

Keith, No need to explain why you were planting so many bro, some of us know your reasons and they are personal. I commend you on all that you do for your family, and your friends, you are very generous bro and a great person! It's a shame that the weather took your plants bro, I know how much this season meant to you. If there is anything that I can do bro, you know I'm here! Tom

What you're doin is great. :) I had to fish my hoophouses out of the creek last week when that storm came through here, so dont feel bad man. BTW, are ya comin up to mansfield speedway for 4th of july weekend? Freedom festival is the 1st through the 3rd...gonna be a blast!!

Sorry I ruffled YOUR feathers. Mine are fine. I'm sure your intentions are the greatest and everyone tells me youre a fine guy. Nowhere do I say your lazy or stupid and resent you saying I did. 20 is too many even if they're for the kids etc if your still developing the soils and stuff. As for your taking these things serious or not well thats up to you to decide, but decide from my point of view: will the next thunderstorm blow your hoophouses away for the FOURTH time? (Maybe you should secure them better? I'm pretty darn sure when something goes wrong on the racecar you fix it so it won't happen again. Use that mentality on these things if you want to be successful ). Not ALL of us know what your intentions are. SOME of us assume your trying to grow BIG PUMPKINS , if thats NOT the case don't get on my ass about telling you how it is. The fact of the matter is if your hoophouse blows off three times your not taking it serious. Apparently your not the big boy I figured and can't take the kick in the butt you seemed to need....I apologize for my misinterpretation. As for my "asking a question already asked" I was referring to other peoples diary posts where they got hail and what they did to prevent it (Scotts hail cover etc) and there's been blown over hoophouses posted and what they did, and what some do against critters etc...apply their situations to your patch as a preventative measure thats all. Geez.

If you want one,,yep, only one, I will mail you one from batch 2. 3 have been removed for small size.
If you are near Knoxville in latitude,,, or attitude,,,, you should be able to go do well.

The poor guy just asked a simple question. Is it too late? That could be answered with a simple yes/no. Last year my houses were blown over two times because of a hurricane. Not much that I could have done to prevent that.

Glen I totally agree with you on the matter of being one step ahead of the game, as being one step ahead is a mandatory measure here where I am growing. AS we have already had hail here this season and some horrific winds, but hopefully I don't think things could get as bad as last season with 18 plus hail storms ( no joke ) and tons of cold all summer, but I still managed a 500+lbr and had to bust my butt to do it trying to literally grow in the hell of 2004..It was a learning experience even though I have been growing for over ten years with lots of experience behind me, and the lessons never end as nature can put a whipping on you when she feels like it and when you least expect it...lol..Hopefully everyone has a great 2005 season....Best wishes to all...JK..

I've had the same problems... RECORD LATE lows in the 20's the last weekend of April - I was out of town at a Equine competition. Danny tried to protect Them - but we had major damage to 50% of that crop....
In Jan-March we had record downpores - Hard to get it dry enough to even till... Then May hit - and we've had a whopping 1/2 inch the entire month!!! Though it's raining today - FINALLY!!!
Seems to be setting up for a 'drought year' interspersed with sever storms/downpores....
What I've done - planted Veg garden behind house (house is on the west side - works as wind break) Barn is on one side - big horse shelter on the other side (more wind breaks..) Veg garden is situated on TOP of septic drainage field - once their roots are deep enough - drought won't be a big issue. I piled the soil up into rows and mounds in order to protect young crops from 'storm washout' - and now I'm using a lot of old hay piled in between raised mounds/rows to help hold what moisture we are able to get.......
Good luck!!!

I'm all behind ya' Burr and support you 100%, you have your own unique challenges to overcome in tackling this hobby. Glenn does make some valid points however, and I don't think he means any of it on a personal level. You just have to learn from mistakes and use different methods and manners when the need calls for it.
