Several weeks ago I asked about small male flowers growing on my early plant...906 Tanner...replies varied from, its mutant, pull it out, trim off flowers, let it grow, and, dont you dare pull it, it is one of my seeds (from Gordon). The plant is doing very well and first fruit pollinated on Monday at about 11.5' out on main. Question is: Is it soil related that produces the early flowers? 2nd and 3rd plants...891 Zunino and 1075 Daletas are both producing small male flowers already. 2nd or 3rd leaf nodes. Could an ovarabundance of something in the soil be triggering the males? Thanks for all the help. Peace Wayne

Glad to hear that it is doing well so far I hope it's on doing so. I'm not sure about the answer to your question.... but the male flowers always show up before the females... and typically a flower either male or female will show up at every node.

In my experience's the plants under stress seem to throw flowers sooner than those with less stress. Take a look at a root bound plant in a pot, they seem to be loaded with flower buds. This may be natures way of saying "hey I don't have much time to live let me try and reproduce" Nothing solid to prove this except my own observations.

I can back that theory up. I have a test plant I've been keeping alive in a small 2 litre pot at work. Main is about a foot and a half long, I can count at least a dozen male flowers on it. A second test plant also in my office, but in a 10 gallon pot, is the same length, with absolutely no flowers to speak of yet.

Leaves me curious as to the source of the stress. The first plant did get a little warm in closed up hoop house till I figured out how warm it got so fast. 2nd and 3rd plants look very good. Transplants went very well. Plants were only in 1.5 gal containers for 5 or 6 days after sprouting, not root bound at all. 1st plant is doing so well that I guess this is not something I should worry about. Thanks Peace Wayne
