Last year my wife purchased around five smaller pumpkins for decoration around the house. These are the kind of pumpkins that are most common for making pumpkin pie with,I know because she asked the guy what kind of pumpkin it was and he told her the name of it but she cant remember that only its grown to make pumpkin pie.Anyone know the name of it?
Reason why I ask is because I threw all these pumpkins in my compost pile last year and have found some that sprouted growing in my compost pile. I have a really nice looken plant that I brought inside thats starting the second true leaf. I was wondering if I grow this like a Atlantic Giant and leave one pumpkin on it for fun, whats the biggest you think it will get on a guess?

If you are trying to get a large hard stem variety. Go with a Gold Rush, Howden Biggie, or Jumpkin Jack. You could try doing what you want to do, although I don't think you will be happy with the results.

Tan-cheese is the name of the best pie pumpkin in the Circleville area. It is almost brown with a warty surface. It was used by the canning companies that used to be in Pickaway county.

Thats the name of it,Sugar Pumpkin. Thanks Ray.
Since this seedling sprouted in my compost pile from last year composted Sugar Pumpkins,Im Going to try just for fun growing one pumpkin off the main vine, grow it just like I would a AG Pumpkin. It will be fun messing around with it. Any of you guys ever try it? LOL

Keep in mind, the words Sugar Pumpkin and Pie Pumpkin have taken on the same status that Zerox has to copiers. Most who sell pumpkins have not grown them themselves and may be referring to them as Sugar Pumpkins or Pie Pumpkins merely because of their size. My main point here is, those seeds that are sprouting may actually be from one of the many smaller sized hybrid pumpkins which are being sold as and grown because of their better qualities(PM tolerance, Mosaic virus tolerance, fruit uniformity, semi-bushing, etc.) and therefore may end up producing something quite different from the mother. Good luck though, BF
