Ok...my frost killed plant has made an amazing recovery. It took a while and looked mor elike a pumpkin bush than anything until this week. There are definitely two main vines and it is growing quite vigorously. My backup plant is putting on it's 5th leaf today.

There's a lot of talk about what causes double vines, but are they all bad? I'd like to grow 2 pumpkins...could I grow one on each vine?

double vines are not so much of a problem, the flat vines are the real problem.
and yes, you can grow one pumpkin per vine after the double vine has split into two normal vines or, what most growers do, cut one back and use the second one as the main vine to get all energy into this one vine and into one fruit...

Oh, oh. What's so bad about flat vines? I think I may have one. I'll take some pics soon for my diary. But, the part that looks flat to me isn't really on the vine. So, maybe I'm safe.

flat vines keep getting wider and wider, instead of just staying a double vine fused together.

widest flat vine i've seen was 26 inches across. impossible to set anything on that kind of a main vine from what i understand.

WHAT! 26 inches?

Anyway, on closer inspection the part of my plant that I thought was flat really isn't. It's just getting pretty thick and it looked flat from the angle I saw it. The pictures have been posted and are awaiting confirmation.

We had one here last year that got about 8" wide. A total mutant that never did set a fruit. 26" must be a real freak show! LOL

Hmmm...maybe I'm cornfused on what a double vine is. Before the frost hit, there was one vine coming off the base of the plant. Now there is a fork at the base and two vigorous vines coming off at different angles. The vines are definitely seperate.

I like double vines, easier to train to go the right way! LOL

As long as they dont go flat, I think double vines are on the verge of maximum vigor

Is it true that a double vine plant is harder to get a fruit set on. I read some posts and got that impression.
I have a plant I'm growing right now that went double and now seems to have straightened itself out.
Tom, I'm glad you mentioned the vigor of a doulbe vine plant because I was really wondering what to expect.

Two vines is not a "double vine". It's just 2 vines. Hard pruning can cause many plants to respond with extra "branching" & AGs are no exception.

The double vines to which we speak are genetic mutants that produce 2 leaves on the same place on the vine that one belongs. Two tendrils instead of one. Etc.

From what I have observed, either of 3 situations can result:
The plant can be coaxed into returninmg to normal growth.
The plant continues to try to double & gives fits of frustration to it's keeper.
The thing turns into a flat vine that ribbons into an interesting waste of space.

There might be others who have experienced different results.

huntoften,

Is this plant producing leaves singly at each axis?

Double vines are two vines that are fused togther, like flat vines they are both mutations, however a double vine sometimes corrects itself buy splitting into two main vines, or one end can be terminated to form just one main vine, i had two plants that went double in 2002 and one that went flat.

this is a pict of an emmons 1111 that started out double (notice the dividing line) before it split off into two mains.

this is a picture of a Kuhn 980 that went flat.

DaveM, it's amazing how much of a difference a couple of hours can make. I noticed that the temperature in my poly house had jumped up around 32 degrees C. So, I went out to open the sides and ventilate. When I did, all of the leaves were pretty wilted. It's probably justa temporary condition caused by the heat. But, maybe they could use a watering as well.

I just want to make sure that everything is relatively stable in the next two weeks before I go away for a week and put everything on autopilot.
