If you were trying to grow pumpkins(or anything else) in the northeast you would know what Steve is talking about. One of the coolest Mays on record with no relief in the forecast. Rain predicted all week too. How's the weather in WA?

Thw weather here in southern B.C can't seem to make up it's mind. During the day it has been partly cloudly and partly sunny, mainly cloudly though. Sometimes some clouds come and let out some rain then go away as quick as they came--only to come to get a repeat of the same thing later during the day. It hasn't been the ideal weather of a few weeks ago, that's for sure.

I don't think we've broken 80*F yet this year. The Weather Channel says rain & 50s every day of the extended forecast. Nor'easter coming too. Grrrrr...

Steve, if it's a consolation, the weather in Ontario has been the same. Hope it warms up soon.

Damping off has become an issue in our Northcentral Pennsylvania area. Cold weather, cold rain and soft tender plants do not go together very well.

Cold frames watched very closely helps but in a few cases we were not able to be warm enough and dry enough.

Two of the keys to success is to run dry....very easy on the watering if any. Permit the seedlings to harden in a dry protected frame up to full first leaf or maybe even a tad further. This moves the plant into a stronger position even at the expense of some root over development in the seedling pot.

Waiting for warm weather is a passing issue. The plants need to be in the soil so the roots may expand even if ever so slowly. Working the cold frames and hoop houses is the big issue this spring in my opinion. Living with plants that may be a tad yellow may be good management. It seems to me that pushing for color with nitrogen of any type is asking the roots to do something they are not developed to handle at this moment.

If the frames are kept to warm the plants will stress if not from the heat from the change when the covers are removed.

This time period is one to test your observation skills. Growing soft plants will seldom end up positive in the long run. Patience is very much an issue. Observing your weeds is a rule of thumb. Right now I don't have hardly any weeds germinating. Mother is not ready to grow them properly just yet.

Part of global warming is more cold weather.
The japs have a great set of supercomputers that have shown all kinds of possible crazy weather.
They have a web site.

Fact is the earth cannot survive "progress".
Every year more filth goes into our air, land, and water.
FACT:We are not making the EARTH cleaner.

the earth will survive. people won't. that's the beauty of it.

finally getting a little rain here today. we needed it. just in time, too. i got my buckwheat in on sunday, so hopefully it will have a chance to germinate before too much gets picked out by the birds.

the pumpkins are going slow so far, but most look healthy.

Imagine dealing with those temps in July and August...thats what we did last year.....

Heat your greenhouses, and put grow lights in them and run them 24/7 or at night The plants dont even know the difference.

should be finally warming up for you folks, Minnesota FINALLY broke out of the 30 day cold snap yesterday and its now in the "average" temperature range for the next week. Last Time I seen a high over 75*f was the FIRST WEEK OF APRIL when I convinced myself it was going to be a "good summer" :)

I am very interested to hear this....we have been breaking record highs this month for almost a solid week. Its been running around 98F and 99F. I had assumed that it was warmer everywhere. We have also been in drought mode. We may finally get rain tomorrow....hope so...the plants really need it.

5/24/2005 2:02:57 PM

hey you

Greencastle, PA

the theory called global warming is a little misleading, the effect can cause extreme temperatures on either end of the spectrum.

The idea that is now called the “Greening Theory holds that all this extra CO2 is good. It will result in increased plant growth and thus in resulting increases in food supplies. Thus Global warming is a non issue. In fact increasing CO2 levels to your pumpkin will result in greater growth.

Regarding increased CO2...just ask Dean Biss. He grows his plants in big greenhouses with added CO2 via CO2 generators.

Sounds to me like McPumpkin and giantvegenetics are ready to "string him up"!

I'm sure glad I acclimated my plants to upper-40/ lower-50 degree temps 2 weeks before I put 'em out....they seem to be handling the weather very well considering.

At 4am Wednesday morning I may be sitting here eating last nights words and all the others I've made about folks starting too early ....it's now 35.8 degrees outside and that may just be it for Mr. Late-start-I'm-smarter-than-you-or-Mother-Nature-I-acclimated-my-plants-I'm-not-gonna-bother-heating-my-cloches-everybody-planted-too-early-Southern this year.
If these plants pull through this and grow like gangbusters, I'm a lucky and blessed guy.
Time to start a very late #2 batch of seeds and forget about any significant amount of weight coming out of Southern's patch this year...geez!

They say misery loves company. We're having a real love-fest here aren't we?

Clouds, showers, & cool forecasted for the next 7 days here. It's a good thing our 845 is in a heated greenhouse. But sooner or later I'll have to cut it loose on a very unusual world.

Hmmm we had a cold summer last year and still had another world record and higher weights than ever overall. I suspect this year will be the same again weight wise.
