It seems that double vining is becoming more common, why is that? Maybe there is a way to make a double vine plant a plus in the future. There has got to be a way but how!?

I don't know if it's becoming more common, or it's the fact more folks are growing & more folks are joining this site. Therefore you will hear about more cases, you won't hear about all the healthy plants ( no need to post a question about it) but folks will post about a problem. That's what the sites here for..

Back in 97/98 when I started, growers were still giving out seed packets with 5 seeds of a kind in them. You were encouraged to start 2-3 of them and chose the best. I'm sure the two that got chucked had high percentages of "mutants" but it wasn't a problem.....now, with people paying 40 bucks a pop for new unproven seeds, and upwards of 500 for the good ones its a problem....cause your only starting one.

Good point Glenn. When was the last time you found 5 seeds in a bubble & started all of them in pots?

Dave had an 846 Calai that doubled last year. He pruned & grew it out. There was a nice fruit on it that started leaking (probably not a double vine thing but rather an 846 thing) just before our '04 patch tour. The college kids rolled it down the hill for it's final demise just days after the tour. It weighed around 6-700 lbs at the time I think.

Brooks I grew a 998 in 2003 from a 582 Hester. I cut the main off right after the first side vine. It never went back to a double vine the rest of the year, but it had a severe wound on the stump.I had a 1016 last year that was a double vine that I wasen't able to set a fruit on at all. Spent a lot of time on that plant befor pulling it up.Don't know if I would try to grow out another one. Best of luck Joe

what is considered double? Having two tips on each vine with two vines fused together, or any vine showing double leaves even if it's a single vine? I have had two 950 boyton plants that have normal vines in many places, and other vines have double leaves on them. So is a partially double plant still a double or just something in the middle?:) Jimmy

03 grew out an 803 Davies [mostly because i had few other options] that was a flat [multiple vine say 8 or so] and double leave, tendril, etc... to 569lbs. JJ looking at my 1016 and keeping my fingers crossed. Peter

I just got in from inspecting my plants and it looks like my 1104.5 Hester is coming out as a double vine. It kind of looks like a big lump of vine with leaves coming out in pairs here and there. I'm leaning towards pulling and replacing right now. It would be a hard job to figure out where to prune and split. It's too bad, I was counting on this plant as a pollinator. It does seem that this is a more common problem than in the past.
