Do the side vines ever produce pumpkins?
If so how good do they do?

Yes, in fact some very large fruit too. We have heard many stories of growers who lost main vine fruit and still finished with good sizes.

I grew a 400 lber last year on a secondary and a 400 on the primary on the same plant. I couldn't bring myself to cut one off. I'm sure the fruit on the primary would have been larger had I remover the one on the secondary. I think if I'm getting good fruit set in the future, I likely won't pollinate any on secondary vines.

I also grew a 370 lber on a secondary last year...The pumpkins on the mains kept aborting so I left that one on the secondary. It was a very late pollination and didn't receive much love but still did well...Chris

On a single plant grown from my 710. Conditions: Grower planted, in manure and leaves tilled under, in the fall. Modest organic fertilizers went on, in the spring. He then got sick and did "absolutely nothing" until October. The patch was some distance from his home. No one did anything or even looked, to see, what was going on.
The results were: One over 500, one over 400 and five more scattered all over the secondary areas for a total net weight just over a ton.
So much can go wrong that I suggest new growers set one on the main and one, on a secondary. If you have good overall conditions and good seed two over five hundred would not be an unexpected event.
