Is anyone else fighting the wind? Today we had sustained winds of 45 MPH, with gusts to 70 MPH. That kind of wind sure exposes any design flaws in the hoop house very quickly.

that would have to be one hell of a hoop house to stay up in 70 mph, anyone who can must be an engineer

Beet We generally get the same winds here. This spring has been average. Our highest was 80 km gusts (50 mph) so far this spring. It's tough to contend with. I closed in my plants, tried 8 ft wind breaks, but I think I made it worse. Good luck and keep both feet on the ground Eddy

I heard strong winds here last night, and it's still pretty gusty. The one hoophouse I just put up stayed in place, but the ends opened up. I had them held dowon with rocks. Looks like bricks will be better.

pile a bunch of dirt on the plastic goes a long way. Start with a few bricks and rocks but cover with dirt. We are very windy here in Iowa .... I HATE wind.

With our constant wind, I have to use many 60 pound sand bags, and 5 gallon buckets filled with sand to keep the houses in the garden. I have about 1,000 pounds around one hot house. Any less weight, and my hot house would be in the neighbors yard fast.

I'm fighting it today. We've got a steady 50 mph wind, gusting over 60 and my hoophouse is dancing around, but still intact. Last year's shelter was built cheaply and crashed and burned a few times. This year, I tried to fortify my 16x15 shelter and build it as strong as I could. I'm glad I went with the 6 mil. I think anything else would be toast by now. I'm nervously looking out the window every few minutes and getting nothing done. Stupid wind.

The wind came last night and shifted one of my cold frames right on my 961 Daletas. The stem is intact so I think it will recover.

I notice some greenhouse/hoophouses are quite tall and therefore more prone to wind uprooting. Mine are rounded on top, and maybe only two feet high at the top(5'X 5' at the base).

Its so windy where I grow hoop houses arent possible. Its also so far I cannot be there everyday to open and close anything...so open topped saran wrapped wooden stakes it is...I'll be way behind this year if it stays so cold.(5-8 degrees colder there than home too). If I only had electric.................
