Read alot about deformed, weird or strange cotts this year. Could it be from soaking the seeds too long, especially in peroxide. Some of mine did the weird stuff, especially the ones I soaked the longest. Any ideas ?????

LOL I guess I deserved that. But I had more deformed cotts from peroxide only, so there.

No more straight 3% HP soakings for me!! I'm convinced that it leads to deformed cots! It nearly ruined my season this year! I noticed on those seeds where I exposed the distal end of the seed, the cots were damaged.

To be honest, the 3% that I was using was quite old....maybe five years. Perhaps it's like booze...gets stronger with age?

if you get a normal growth tip, dont worry about it. Check the pic of the 705 Stelts that I posted on here eons ago.....If that plant can start growing a pumpkin at 35+ pounds a day, any can.

aparently I never submitted that pic, so I just put it up, and also the pic of the plant that grew the 1097 is in the photo gallery.

I soaked my backup 753 Eaton in straight 3% peoxide after filing, just to see what would happen, and the thing popped in 48 hours and is still going HAMMER DOWN. I posted the pic in my diary. BTW the 475 Barret backup plant got the same treatment and the cots look fine. Just my 2 cents worth. Mike

3% Peroxide doesn't hurt seeds.
But something is weird this year. One grower on the phone tonight suggested too much inbreeding. Especially now that seeds are so regularly traded to all different areas. But I doubt it.
I'm inclined to think some other arcane factor is at work. Sun spots, solar flares, planetary alignements, terorist gas attack gone bad....something is amiss that's for sure.
Maybe we ticked of the ghost of Warnock?

I soaked all my seeds this year in 3% peoxide. Some of my cots where weird looking like never before. I would mix it half and half other years and the cots looked normal. So next year, I'll go back to the old way of doing things.

Might there be any thought that the natural bacteria might be whooped, by the chemicals, which may cause deformity?
I have had deformity only this year while changing nothing. My coach started me on 3% mixed 50/50 with water and a pinch, of kelp. That is all I ever did. Two years there was no deformed cottys while this year there were many...of mine and other friends near by.
Half of the seeds this year yielded deformed or under developed cottys. Interesting...with no answer except that is what they did this year.

I have also had alot of wrinkled up cots.Out of about 15 seedlings I have grown this year,Only two seedlings had perfect looking cots.I used only a cap full of 3% peroxide this year on most of my seeds.Last year I used more then that and never had a problem. I think the Black Hole is getting bigger, lets all chip in and take our wives hair spray cans ASAP!,lol

My cots are always bad, but this year much more so. I soaked in peroxide like many other folks...did that do it? Who knows...

I soaked all my seeds in 3% mixed 50/50. All of the cots on the first 8 plants curled up.I did the same thing with 8 backups and they are all normal The only thing I changed the 2nd time is the potting mix that I used. The 1st mix was miracle grow with ferts. in it and the 2nd mix was without ferts in it.I wounder if there could be any connection to the type of mix each grower uses and the deformed cots. One thing i would like to mention is that 6 of the 8 backup seeds were the same seeds as the 1st 8.

I used the 3% H2O2 straight out of the bottle on all my seeds (20/+) this year and all but one seedling had perfect cots. Did the same in past years and never had a problem...

3% peroxide straight up & 50/50 depending on how much was left in the bottle at the time. 8-12 hours at 85*F each time. One curly cot out of 11 starts. No different than the prior 2 years.
I'd say avoid fertilizer enhance potting soils of all types if cleaner options are available. I detest any "supplement" that doesn't have a guaranteed analysis. The analysis of potting soils is so low the manufacturer doesn't have to list it. But it could still be high enough to cause trouble.
I'm with Stan on this one. Bad moon phases are bad news. There are forces at work to which we are not privy. LOL

soaked mine in straight 3% for almost 5 hours. I now have a small hole opening in one of the cots on the 753 eaton, but man this thing is going nuts, I really need to find it a good home!!
