Please don't judge me as a fruitcake or unscientific but what are some of your thoughts on this subject? http://www.dovesong.com/positive_music/effects_of_music.aspJust curious.

Hmm, I think this was the study my parents reference in trying to tell me rock music will destroy my mind ;)

Very cool stuff. This theory was actually tested scientifically on my personal favorite show, Mythbusters. It's been awhile since I saw the show but there was a definite connection between music/noise and plant growth. I'll see if I can't find the link.

The only scientific approach I heard of came to the conclusion: plants are deaf :)

I saw the same Mythbusters program Brian. They actually determined that any noise, be it rock music, talking, or yelling appeared to help their pea plants. Unfortunately,if you recall, they had a watering system malfunction that nearly killed the entire crop and the myth was neither proved nor disproved. They did note that the plants subjected to rock music did seem to be outperforming the others, but their location on the roof could have prevented the plants from drying out as badly as the others when the automatic watering system failed. I think this myth comes from the fact that if people take the time to talk to, or play music for their plants, they will also have a tendency to care for their plants better than other gardeners. The extra attention is what makes the plants healthier.

I've heard that it may have something to do with vibrations. If you play the music loud enough, it's supposed to loosen up the soil, and help root growth. Thunder is supposed to do the same thing.
It may all be a load of hoo-ie, but it's fun to talk about.

O'boy! O'boy! now I can go yardsale hunting for a two buck radio. It will at least have some effect, on the deer, that can hear....if you cover it with a sweat laden T-shirt. Guarenteed for the first night only. :)

if i remember correctly Carlos Perez of Spain, aka Don Q., would play music in his patch all the time while he was working. it surely didn't hurt his results. my buddy Timmer grows AGs on my other half of the yard. (well it use to be a yard.) he plays the 60s and 70s oldies channel here in Joliet Illinois called "The Pickle" while drinking beer and working on his plants. its not my taste in music, but it is funny to hear Neil Diamond tunes followed by ABBA, Carly Simon, and other artists that remind me of the long vacation trips in the car my family use to make as a kid. the only problem is once you get a song like "Dancing Queen" in your head, it takes 2 or 3 days before it goes away. lol.

I played in my patch one year, but it was to keep animals away.

This is an interesting subject that reminds me of a similar study conducted years ago.
I can't help but wonder if this isn't more closely related to the sort of people who spend so much time with their plants that they end up with music playing to keep themselves amused. Some studies like this also bring up the "talking" to plants. Again I believe this sort of person is just a good gardener in general & thus the result improves.
Other theories speak to the increase of carbon dioxide emitted by the human gardener which is an obviously verifiable benefit to all higher plants. People who spend time with their plants simply give their plants the benefit of their own spent breath.
However.......I remember reading about a test some years ago of plants hooked up to a lie detector of the sort used by law enforcement. When the plants were visited by angry people with hostile thoughts, the lie detector went nuts & plant growth suffered. However when calm, plant caring people visited the plants the lie detector settled down & growth rates increased.
If time permits, this would be a neat related subject to research if such data is out there on the www somewhere. I doubt this was ever verified in peer reviewed trials but it might have been.

You can dance, you can jive, having the time of your life See that girl, watch that scene, dig in the dancing queen
Friday night and the lights are low Looking out for the place to go Where they play the right music, getting in the swing You come in to look for a king Anybody could be that guy Night is young and the music’s high With a bit of rock music, everything is fine You’re in the mood for a dance And when you get the chance...
You are the dancing queen, young and sweet, only seventeen Dancing queen, feel the beat from the tambourine You can dance, you can jive, having the time of your life See that girl, watch that scene, dig in the dancing queen
You’re a teaser, you turn ’em on Leave them burning and then you’re gone Looking out for another, anyone will do You’re in the mood for a dance And when you get the chance...
You are the dancing queen, young and sweet, only seventeen Dancing queen, feel the beat from the tambourine You can dance, you can jive, having the time of your life See that girl, watch that scene, dig in the dancing queen

Ever feel completly alone in da woods? YOU WERE NOT ALONE.... In PENN. there is a plant they say is miles long.
Ya dont needs no brains to feel, just the act/ability of sence. And then there are the vibrations of life and harmonics.

lol. ben ben ben. you got me smiling ear to ear. now you just reinforced that song in my head. it is funny to see all the lyrics in writing. i am still laughing right now while i am typing. i am going to a chicago whitesox game tonight in a limo with 7 other buddies, and i bet on the way home when i am loaded i will break into song. it will probably be like that commercial when the one guy is singing that song, "Yea, I feel like a woman" and all his other buddies are giving him strange looks. except my friends won't just give me looks, i will get a slap upside the head or a punch in the arm, and well deservedly so. lol lol lol.

My parents neighbors' kid had a rock band that practiced in their garage. They were aweful and the grass in their yard never grew right. Hmmmmm.

I tried singing to my tomato plants and three of them died even before the frost came. Which by the way, did not harm the garden. Had everything covered.
