What is the happy zone for Pumpkins roots? I'm putting in drip lines, hence wanted to know how deep to go with them.

The happy zone can be best improved by just dropping the drip lines about three or four inches under the surface. I use a simple hoe to dig the trenches.
In dry weather like we presently have the soil surface will remain dry. No weed germination to speak of.
This can be improved somewhat by using a mulch over all. I use some ground leaves and straw over the leaves.
Enough will wick up. Most will wick down. This covers your happy zone very nicely.
At the end of the season you can simply pull up the lines. No digging what so ever. That's nice too.
Underground is a bit more work but I think you will really like the advantages you gain.
