In the 2nd or 3rd book on growing Giant Pumpkins, the flag pattern for vines is described. In a small patch could 2 plants be grown with the flags on opposite sides? Has anyone ever tried a flag?

Flag pattern may work for some in certain circumstances but most will grow in the xmas tree pattern. Your call, but as a new grower, I'd go with 1 plant (with a back-up) and fill that 18X24 area and grow 2 fruit. One one the main and one on the secondary. There are many growers that manage to grow 2 very large pumpkins on the same plant.

I grow 2 flag and 1 xmas tree patterns and the flag was the best for me last year it depends on how much room and what shapes fit best. Why not invent a new pattern.
