I have had a hoop house in place for about 2 weeks now, made out of 6 mil plastic and pvc tubing. I put a plant in the house 2 days ago and now that I am paying more attention to the house, I notice a strong platic odor everytime I look in the house. I know the odor is coming from the plastic sheeting. Will whatever chemical/compound that is causing the odor be detrimental to the plant? The plastic is not in contact with the plants, it is several feet away from the plant.

Is it from the plastic or the pvc pipes? The PVC and plastic have a reaction that weakens the plastic over time.

I'd say it is the pastic film. I've never smelled any pvc that smells like this, but now that I think about it I have another hoop house with lettuce in it that is made of the same stuff but it does not smell. The only difference is that the house that smells has a heating cable burried underneath it....

Then the smell might be the heat cable. Were you careful to prevent the cable from ever contacting itself? The outer layer might be cooking itself.

brand new poly has it's own smell, which will go away in time. i haven't heard of an impact on plants, if that is the source.
