I'm gonna try mulching this year, I have a ton of grass clippings I can use at my patch. My patch is at a friends house and they use a weed control and fertilizer in granular form they put on in the spring, weed and seed or something similar in name. Will this be any problem for my patch to use the clippings if the granular was applied to the grass? I wouldn't think it would but wanted to ask for sure. Thanks Jimmy

No one can for sure answer this question because it is not a clear question. What specifically are the chemicals put on that yard? Chances are they were for broad leaf plants. If so any residule would not be good, in any broad leaf plant planting area.

It is highly unlikely that your friends were able to find (let alone be willing to pay for) a Weed & Feed that contained CLOPYRALID which is the herbicide you would want to avoid. Watch also for products that contain DICAMBA which can also cause problems if the clippings are used in the patch too soon.

When in doubt, wait a few weeks before collecting or using the clippings. Clopyralid treated turf clipping must be composted for a YEAR before going in the garden.

I have used grass clippings before in a regular garden. They break down slowly and tended to act like a grass mat where water took a while to penetrate and actually rolled across it.That was my experience anyways.I am thinking real hard about laying a layer of flattened cardboard boxes down and then putting on top a layer of wood chippings which I can get free from city. This was recomended to me,still thinking about it.

I have mulched with grass clippings the past few years. I end up with small pumpkins, in part due to my low soil temperatures due to the mulch. No mulch for me this year. I'll see if there is a difference.

last year i used compost for mulch. the city here lets you have as much as you want for free. i put down about a 2 inch layer over the whole patch, and the weeds that did pop up were minimal. plan on using compost again this year.
