Well I thought of this idea because I need a way to heat my cold frames at night. Unfortunetly I couldn't have my patch near an electrical unit, so I need a new idea to heat my cold frames. My cold frames are 4 ft by 6 ft so I thought the only cheap way to heat my frames is by candle. They give off a lot of heat if I put a few of them in there, plus wouldn't they feed off of the oxygen in the cold frame and emit carbon dioxide for the plant? That would be good if its true. Please place some suggestions on this. Thanks

A candle is a maybe source of heat. Maybe it will stay lit maybe it will go out.

Just a though there but your coldframes are enclosed, if you use candles, what about the fumes that the candles give off. Would they have any effect on the pumpkin vines? The carbon dioxide would probably benefit the vines but what about the other fumes etc that the candle will emit? I don't have an answer but just a question that popped into my head. Another thing is fire safety. As you already know and have thought of this. Just keep the candles so that they cannot fall over and cause any unwanted problems :)

Why not try a petroleum or oil greenhouse heater?
They cost about 30 bucks and burn slowly for about a week.
A heckuva lot warmer than candles...

I had my hothouse heathed directly from my room last year... the problem was that I got cold!

Didn't guys burn candles in their tents in WW2 to keep warmer at night? I had heard this. The fumes or whatever get out. Tents and greenhouses are not air tight.

I used citronella smudge pots last week for a frost we had, and they worked great. Got them at Lowe's

Any thought of *potentially* causing a fire come to mind?

That's what fire dept's are for.

I guess I should use candles then. The fire station is just down the street a couple of hundred feet.

Don´t underestimate the fumes. I even used special filtered petroleum for indoor use but a cheap heater won´t care - it stinks so much in a tent a person needs to leave after a while, how can it be healthy for a plant?
IMHO use camping gas lights or small gas heaters. It has a fertilizer function as well to burn gas in a greenhouse.

oh, they MUST make an extension cord long enough for this, lol. even better might be bulk house wiring by the roll and put a plug on each end.
as you can see there are mixed reviews. how much do candles cost---would YOU wanna be in a room with a light bulb
or a candle---i think there will be wax residue on the plant from the candle/smoke, but good luck. eric
