Average last frost date in KC was mid-April. We had a couple of nights of frost/freeze warning and I diligently covered everything. Must have missed the forecast Sunday evening though. It was a weird frost...hit my AG with a 20 inch main vine and growing vigorously and hit 4 tomato plants on the other side of the yard, but it missed all my peppers, the main tomato bed, my cukes, gords, squash, beans, etc. Two tiny areas of frost...unfortunately I am having to re-start my first season. Sighhhhhhhhh. :(

Grow and learn. You will find out soon you are always checking the weather. We have lights in our hoophouses, along with heaters in circuit. I often find my self getting up and looking for the light. Still have plenty of time to grow a big one.

this is one lesson that you will never forget. all is not lost though, starting right now is very normal for a lot of growers, do not get depressed!

We have freezing temps in Wyoming most nights until mid May at least. As long as the electricity stays on, the plants are fine. So that I don't have to worry about loosing electricity and my plants some night, I added a wireless temperature sensor in my hot house. I put the main unit by my clock in the bedroom. Normal night temps in the hot house are 53 to 57 degrees. I have the thermometer set on an alarm so that if the temperature ever drops below 37 degrees, it will wake me up. No worries now about freeze.

Life is better! I'm a fifth grade teacher and have been telling my students about my AG escapades the past few months. When they found out that I lost my plant, they all wrote me "sympathy" cards complete with little dead pumpkins with "X's" for eyes and some nice poems. I'll try and scan a few for you to read.
I've peeled the seed coat off three new seeds and have them germinating in baggies over my monitor now....life will go on! Lesson learned!

Hey Beet. I have had to use candles, propane heaters, even the barbeque in the cold frames in past years to keep things warm......What a challenge it is at high altitude...We are supposed to get our first day of sun here tomorrow, as we have had none in the past week, just snow ,cold, drizzle, fog, and freezing rain.......looks like another normal year for us here in Colo...Then when it warms up, the hail comes......Happy growing
