Well I know they are cookable but do they still taste good

Does anyone make pumpkin pie when the season is done with there gian pumpkins?

also with the Giant Watermellon varity do they still taste good being grown so large?

just wondering

thanks

I'm no cook but it is my understanding that AGs do not contain the natural sugars that field (pepo) pumpkins do. Thus when preparing pie filling, you need to add sugar to the recipe.

I think there are some pie recipes that are sugar corrected in the recipe section but you'll need to dig through the old posts.

I make corned beef and cabbage w/ giant cabbage at harvest. It's tougher than regular cabbage, but if you drink a little more guiness before you eat, you don't notice.

I have not noticed though if bigger cows improve the meal any.

I make a soup: slightly brown onions on olive oil, add some rosins (dry grapes) and gradually chopped AG… no water! Spice as you like and you get a sweet AG soup.
Alternatively, you start with chopped beef and you get an AG goulash…

see my post on this thread...

Also, I routinely make soup, pie, cake, muffins, etc. out of the giant pumpkins.
I use the eyes, mouth, nose, etc. that I cut out when carving on Halloween...LOL One eye is about enough for 3l of soup or 3 to 4 pies...LOL

I've ate some of my watermelons, but their not as sweet as the smaller ones. Nothing a 60 oz bottle of vodka couldn't cure though. :o)

I found that smaller AG's <200 lbs are excellent for cooking. Some I grew from store-bought seed. I did make some pumpkin bread from a 400lb that was OK. The bigger ones just don't work.
