If you have a plant which has two "first true leaves" does this mean that you have a mutant/double viner/flat viner on your hands? My 1133 Demers looks like it is putting up two first true leaves...

I Had one do it last year on a plant and it ended up double vined. I wouldnt pull it, if it was a good plant,You never know it might just grow normal. If it was me, and its a good seed Id wait to pull it till I see the vine doubled.

Should I complain to the club that auctioned the seed off to me? Just kidding!!!

Definatly a mutant, we have had several and none of them produced anything of significance (Sp?). You can try and pinch off one of the doubles as it grows but your slowing down the plant. Like Shannon said start a replacement...

One of my test seeds did that. If you want to see a picture, check my diary.

Certain genetics are more prone to doubling than others. I wouldn't pull it yet. But Shannon's advice to plant a backup is solid. Some can be trained out of it. Others can't.

Just watch it and see. You can do "surgery" on a double sometimes and get it to revert to a single vine if you do things right and have a little luck. It took me some work last year but I was successful with it on my 1260 Weir. All is not automatically lost.

PS...I would tend to agree with Gads however. I have never heard of a mutating plant that ever produced a pumpkin of significant size. That's not encouraging news, but realistic.

Both my plants last year started out double, and corrected themselves on there own. I would start a backup, and see what happens.

Most new varieties of plants come from mutations of original plant(evolution). It could be a flop or it could be a double vine that grows your largest pumpkin. If you are growing several plants it might be worth trying .We get in a habit of doing the same thing based on our own and others experiences,Nature does not work that way.You possibly have a mutated plant with great genetics that could grow your largest pumpkin ever.Just a thought. i've had some go double for the first two segments, then go back to a normal vine. the thing you have to remember is that until it outgrows the double, it will grow very slowly. for some reason, it takes a lot of energy, so it slows the plant right down. if it does return to a normal vine, the growth rate will return to normal, and you'll have paired secondaries at the start.

2 is fine, if it goes right to 3 or 4, you have a problem. I call those type spider vines.

Go very slowly and gently down the stem past the "two first true" leaves...under the cotes get real close to the ground ..then place the stem between your index finger and thumb and....wring the living s%^T outta it...a good vine is a bear to deal with, a double flat vine...is indescribable..cant turn can't bend em can't do anythng and by the time your training the fifteenth secondary as a main ..you'll be lucky to see a blossom in october!
