How does Merit actually work ? Like can you buy it in a liquid form mix and spray onto entire patch a week or 2 before planting? Would it be best to till the soil on a warm afternoon then spray entire patch to kill any eggs that are down in the soil as this stuff needs to come in direct contact to work correct?
thanks

Merit is soil applied after the last tilling & watered in regardless of whether it is applied as a liquid spray or a granular. The plants absorb the active ingredient & translocate it throught the vascular system & leaves. Flowers & fruit stay clean.

Lasts from 70-90 days at which time some people may wish to reapply depending on pest pressure.

Do a search of this website for "imidacloprid".

It very well may be vine borers.......which you can gladly help me there in what to prepare for. But last year as well as years before there is these little black bugs with a yellow line on them. Last year on the July 1st long weekend I noticed little patches of eggs on the underside of many leaves. I sprayed them all with "SEVIN" as someone had suggested and also cut out alot. About three weeks later all hell broke looose and the pumpkins quit growing. I have also pulled up someof the leaf stocks and saw little tiny fugers with black little eyes steering at me before i jam there little heads into the ground. Basically , im looking for help in advance to stop this. It gets so discouraging to be moving along at such a great growth year after year only to see the same thing happen year after year........ONTARIO CANADA HERE.....please help.......

Lots of choices for insecticides. You will need to do some research on this site. I have done reasonably well with Triazicide without breaking the budget. Whatever you use Read and Follow the directions! More is not better.
Put away the Sevin, you can do a lot better.

Eng do a site search at top of this page for SVB eggs....plenty of responses....I would go with a systemic as quick as possible...merit or grubex....then something with real good contact knockdown scimitar or the like.

Hey Ron, that Triazicide is the Ortho max stuff aint it? I was lookin at it the other day, does it work pretty good, I had alot of those @#$%$ japanese beetles last year. I put out a trap and it got some of them off my pupmkins but they destroyed my green beans. Mike

What I used is called Triazicide made by Spectracide. The active ingredient is "Lambda-Cyhalothrin" .5%. It is listed for use on vegetables. It says it controls adult japanese beetles and 129 other pests. The name may have changed I haven't bought any this year yet.

If we use Grubex at approx the rate directed for lawns,is that strong enough to deal with SVB's? Does this mean we should then make sure no one eats any of our pumpkins or seeds? Do we have to keep it away from the nearby vegetables?

Merit doen't seem to affect the cuke beetles however since using Merit Borers and Squash bugs are nowhere to be found !

i THINK it is not cuke beetles...i think they lay their eggs in the soil.
i also don't think they are Japanese beetle eggs--those are
big ol' grubs under your lawn as far as i know...there's maybe two possibilities gone....
i THINK squash bugs/stinkbug eggs are supposedly plainly visible on the undersides of leaves....good luck.
