I'd like to know what dates most of the growers around here (southern B.C, pacific northwest) are starting there competitive plants at? I know you always do it in two or three batches just in case something goes wrong, so when is a good idea to start the first batch? Would help a lot, I still haven't contacted any nearby growers for info like that.

I am still pretty new at this so correct me if I am wrong, isn't the pollination date the important date here. My thinking is that it really shouldn't matter how early you put the plants in the ground (with proper protection) but rather how lond you wish the plants to be when you reach the golden pollination date.

I'll be starting my First Batch of seeds on April 30th
They will hit the patch by May 8th, Second batch of seeds will be started May 7th and transplanted outside beside other young plants May 14th, I will have 8 plants total in patch by May 8th by second week in June I'll have the patch culled down to the best 3-4 plants growing for remainder of season.

McPumpkin...if you mean the 15th of April, you'll be done way too early before weigh-off time with the SE Tennessee summer. If you mean the 15th of May, right on.

Opie:
In West Michigan I traditionally start 'em May 1 indoors. Outside around the 10th. You could go later, though, in my opinion, and still be o.k...I don't think planting as late as May 15 indoors would hurt a Michigan grower much...you'd be a bit behind, but you could still pollinate by July 15-20.
One drawback to planting late is the onset of PM then hits your plant at an earlier stage of development...a benefit is less time spent with plant protection early.

North Central Pennsylvania is still cold. I am holding for seed planting a week to permit this Canadian Cold Front to go back where it came from. Now thinking about the 25th. If it is still cold maybe as late as the 28th. I can't see cold stressing my babies. I gotta keep saying, to myself, daily, "Patience Jackass Patience". :)
