Hey Folks,

I finally talked my mom into letting me get a tiller. I want one that can last me nearly all of my life(so it has to be well built) and that could handle a bigger garden than what I have now, which is around 900'sq. I am looking for a rear tine that could be comfortably used for about a 2000 sq. foot garden. I have seen troybuilts line and they look great. If you could reccomend some other companies though, that would be great. I hope to get the tiller by May so I can till my parents garden.

Thanks,
Jake

Jake, just got a used bcs for 400. Built very well and does a great job. One thing you can do with bsc is change parts. Snowblower, cutter, and even a plow. Now these are pricy but they should be as good or better than a new Troy. MTD makes Troybuilt now so quality is down a bit. Check out http://bcsamerica.com/tractors.cqs.

I looked at them, but they are a little pricey. I only have a little over $1000 to spend...unless I could find a used one on line. I check the classifieds for BCS's every day but none show up.

Thanks
Jake

I also have a BCS that was made in Italy and I do not know how old it is but it is old. BCS is now made in USA. I got it for 500 dollars used and have used it the last four years with no trouble. It can sit from april to april the next year and will start up with two pulls.

Jake, FYI The shop that I bought mine at is offering the 710 model with 18inch tiller for $850 new. They are on sale and you should be able to deal. Call or visit local dealers I am sure you can find new for under 1K. The pricing is msrp and is always high on the web-site.

have the 710 model better then any troybuilt I have used. Direct drive means no belts or chains and faster tine speed. Does twice the work in 1/2 the time. transmission is guranteed for life. BCS is the only way to go. 850 is cheap paid 2400 cdn for mine 6 years ago.

I looked at and appreciated the Arien's Rear Tiller. It's main feature above over all quality was that the speed of the tines is slower and will not turn your seedbed into dust.

Regretably I must admit that BCS is THE consumer tiller today. The only other decent option is a good used TroyBilt since the new ones are garbage.

Thanks for the info on the Troy bilt tillers. I was going to buy a Troy bilt this fall, now I'll look at the BCS first. They have a dealer in Bloomington. They look good on the web. I like all the attatchments and the tiller is wider. My garden is 100' X 90 so 20" takes forever.

That's 9000 sq.ft....nearly 1/4 acre! You need at least a 4' tiller!

I know Stan. If money were no object I would buy a utility tractor with a 60" tiller. I had a buddy spread out all my leaves and till them in with his tractor. It still took 2 hours and he has a 60" tiller!!!

BCS the only way to go now unless you can find a good old used troybuilt.

Jake, I have not used BCS,So I cant judge them. I can tell ya I have a Troy Built 7hp super bronco it has a cast iron shaft drive with counter rotating tines I can till 5000 sq ft with one hand going back over my tracks 2 times 6" deep in about hour, and half it has reverse too! Ive had it 3 years one pull she's ready to roll. maybe I just got a good one out of the batch? get whats right for you.

Troy Built still makes a quality tiller but they're not cheap and you have to get them from Troy Built dealer not a discount store like Lowes or Home Depot because they're too expensive for the discount stores to carry them. I bought a medium size tiller [pro-line] with a Honda gx commercial grade motor 5.5 hp and it was $1200. The horse and the big red models are far more money than the one I bought but they're built just like the old Troy Builts used to be. Check out the Troy Built web site and see what they have to offer but watch out for sticker shock. www.troybuilt.com. Ray
