Last year both of my plants developed severe kinks as they started to lay down. All ended up fine but I was concerned that important nutrients were getting choked off and at worst a crack would develop in the vine. I tried mounding some soil and it helped a little bit. This year I thought I would angle the seedling more. Any other thoughts?

I try to angle them as much as i dare when i plant them, but have had them kink also. i guess you have to hope (or try to time it) to get them to lay down during the heat of the day, so they might be a little more flexible then.

if you do not put them into the ground at an angle
toward the direction of growth and/or they are trying to
grow straight up no matter what, you can use, perhaps, a
good-sized chunk of computer foam that is used to pack computer products in their shipping cartons. it is grey and very soft...nice to lay your head on, too! easy for me to get it, 'cause there are a million computers where i work and they are getting-in new ones all the time.
i would expect a shipping store or supply place to have
some of it, or a computer repair/sales and service company.

all you would do is put a piece of the foam on the side of the plant where vining is desired and over time you would be using the gentle curvature of the plant laying over the
foam to alleviate the tendency of the main vine to kink...
