Wow, I just discovered this site. I decided this past year that I am going to get serious about growing a big one. Been studying all winter. I am located in SW Iowa. Anyone in this area that I can use as a consultant? My question, "When should I plant my seed inside?"

I'm sure there are growers from iowa that can give you specific dates and times for your area. I usually start my seeds inside near the end of April. After germination they go into peat pots and after the first true leaf forms, they go into the garden with some protection. You might want to get a few spare seeds and practice germination techniques a bit before you try the seeds you plan to plant. Good luck.

The current Iowa state champ is a regular on this site. Do a site search for Mike Frantz. Mike sure can grow them big... and orange.
