I was going to post something about stems the other day and got sidetracked. That is definately the longest stem i've even seen on a pumpkin. Overall, the squash i've grown have all had longer stems than the pumpkins. i'd be interested in hearing any other seeds that had stems as long as that one. For me:

Long stems:
815 Andersen
895* Hester
535* Wolf

Short Stems:
427 Wolf
610 Wolf
1009 Eaton
906.5 Lloyd
991 Hunt

Andy, does the 895 hester usually produce long stems most of the time?

We grew 2 plants of the 756.8*Kennedy03(895*Hester X 990*Hebb) last year. Both of the plants produced exceptionally long stemmed fruit. They remained long stemmed throughout the season too.

both times i grew the 895* it had pretty long stems, and the 895* that Tim Bailey grew last year had a good long setm, even though it didn't need it. the fruit tipped back a bit and never lifted the vine.

895 last year threw long stems for me. Also very brittle, as I had early stem splits...

2 years of growing my 895*'s have both produced long stems, usually in the 7 - 9 inch range, believe it or not! I have a pic of a beer bottle being shorter than the stem on my 717 from 2 years ago off the 895*.

The 879 squash I grew from the 815 Andersen is also a monster stem, I do have a pic of that I will dig up and put in my diary.

Dave Garrell grew an 845 Bobier in 2003 that exhibitted short stems & drove him crazy. I grew a cutting of the same plant in 2004 that had very long stems on each fruit (3).

Go figure. But I've said before & will continue to maintain the certain environmental factor will alter certain genetic traits in ways we simply do not understand.

The 1064 Needham seed will usually grow a fruit with a stem that looks like a pinnochio nose( 862.5 hester 99 x 940 mombert 98 ). When he lied it just grew longer and longer...I love the 1064 genetic, but it seems it grows too fast and may explode, which is why it is avioded like the plague these days, but it is still one of my favorites that will eventually do a giant fruit for somebody. IT is definately being considered as one to be planted soon.. just to breed in that big stem that as we all know can cause headaches come positioning time if it is too stubby.......happy growing..JK...
