I am confused regarding the procedure for naming the parentage of seeds. For example seeds are usually named something like this: 969 Brown '04 (786 Jones '02 F X 821 Smith '01 M).
The way I interpret this is that the seed is from a 969 lb pumpkin grown by Brown in 2004 using the seed from a 786 lb grown by Jones in 2002. However I am not clear whether the Jones seed was crossed with a male flower grown from the seed of the Smith '01 or whether the seed of the 969 Brown was the result of a 2004 cross with a male flower grown from the Smith '01 seed.

If the former is the case then how does one know the male parentage of the seed from the 969 Brown'04 ?

the 821 Smith was used in 2004 as a pollinator for a flower on the 786 Jones plant which resulted in the 969lbs fruit.

The 969 Brown 04 is the progeny of the 786 Jones 02 (F) x 821 Smith 01 (M)Mr, Brown made the cross in 04.Thus the 969 Brown 04 was born. The male flower was the 821 Smith 01 (m)- stand for male Regardless of the year it was grown in.
969 Brown 04 has not been planted yet. It is the 786 Jones x 821 Smiths offspring in 04. you could cross 969 with the Smith 01 in 05. hope that makes sence!
