Anyone out there ever try composted manure from a zoo? We have a program here in Kansas City where you can buy herbivore manure that has been composted (most is elephant!) for a pretty cheap price. I'd think it would be good for conversational purposes to say the least! hehehe

"How that pumpkin get so big?"
"Well, there was a wild elephant running loose last fall..."

Here's the link for those interested in the program:

You guys are so far behind. Have you never heard of "Zoo Doo Mills." He lives in the DC area and grew nice pumpkins using manure from the DC Zoo.

Elephant doo-doo!! Never knew the zoos got rid of it like that. No zoos around here but I was cleaning out my dog kennels yesterday and the thought occured to me to throw a little on the patch...we'll see what happens.

I heard that carnivore doo is not a good thing to put on a garden.

I read a website a little while back from people who compost their doogy-doo. They said that they use it on their flower garden, but never on food crops. I imagine that there could be some pretty nasty pathogens in there.

I guess if you don't intend on eating your giant pumpkin, it might not be a problem. But, there are so many other readily available sources of feces in the world, the stuff from dogs seems hardly worth the effort.

Several sources I have in hand say that if your compost hits 130 - 150 degrees for ten to twenty days most pathegons will be wiped out. This having been said I never made it a practice to use dogie doo. The neighborhood cats make no beans about doing their thing in a nice soft pumpkin patch soil.

I feed our Boxer an all vegetable diet from Wellness. His poops actually look more like cow dung as a result. But I still haven't ever tried composting it.

I wish someone would come up with an acceptable process since a friend of mine owns a very lucrative scooping business. He dumps thousands of pounds of dog dung every month.

The process was invented with the creation of the earth. Composting to the above ranges will do it or going totally anaroebic and running through the worms and other biological life forms to complete and finished compost will do it. The kew words either way are complete and finished.
Back to basics....if it smells like earth it is. If it smells like poop it is.

Jumping over the emotional bar is the hardest. My neighbors accept the fact that my manure does not stink. Been doing my thing here for 30 years. Even changed and retrained neighbors. However... Don't mention dog or cat poop. That 'aint poop.

Boy, I can't imagine buying manure. We usually have more than we can find places to put it! I have horses, and they drop about 40 pounds each a day. Then there is the chicken manure from he coop. Horse and chicken poop does break down nicely, so I guess I am lucky.
