I have a 75 X 75 patch for 9 plants. I plant to grow them in a pin wheel with one plant in the centre. This gives me 600 ft2 / plant and walkways in between

My area is very small. Maybe 20'X10'. But, I can let the vine crawl out onto the lawn later in the season as needed. I'm only growing one. Although, I'm a new grower. So, as a backup, I may plant two and cull the weaker of them.

Crammed, why not grow it the other way and have it 10x20. Run your secondaries out to the side and then up the edge of your patch Like "L" shape. I did that last year and it worked out good.

that way you could bury most of your main vine.

I am not really picturing what you're describing. Do you use MSN messenger? It has a whiteboard feature. It might be easier to picture if I can see it as you describe it.

I was planning on running the main accross the diagonal and then up the side like divyan's "modified flag" (http://www.bigpumpkins.com/DisplayPhoto.asp?pid=1184).

But, I want to avoid growing towards the fence as much as possible (see my diary pics). On one side is a next door neghbour. I had a pumpkin growing in their tree last year. On the other side is the back fence to the road which gets maintained by the town. Last year my vine got mangled by a lawnmower or weedwhacker.
