I believe at its best, no patents are being infringed upon, totally ingenius idea Ernie! I am not sure if your fruit will be eligible due to the altering of the face of the pumpkin/squash (that is, if you are planning on etching the company logo into the skin at a young date to watch it grow), but I think it is innovative and "out of the box thinking!
2200 bucks and counting.. WOW.. Heck, if I can get a group to pay that, I will come work for them too. Free tshirts, sponsorship on the personal level like Nascar Drivers, etc.. Most who say this is a bad idea are just jealous they were not in on it at the beginning.

Some people will do anything for a buck. It turns a hobby into work and what is the fun of that.

Rock, come on now, just cause people dont agree with putting "Suzies Bar and grill sign on there pumpkin does not make them Jealous,Might be because they would like to look at the pumpkin instead of a sign, after all that is what we are there to see is a pumpkin right? Also think there is more to it then your seeing here, maybe not though.

geeze, looks like advertising is more expensive than just buying a 1000 pound pumpkin at weighoff.
yeah, i wish i would have thought of it first. could have made some house payments with that coin!

I still think my two day lease, of a 500lb. pumpkin, on the trailer, to an Ice Cream Mill selling pumpkin ice cream was a hoot too.
All we did was drive it up to the front of the store and park it, for two days. What can I say? The ice cream store owner's daughter got the excitement up. The rest is history. They were pleased. That is all that matters.

How can you sell something that is not there yet? I would think the liability of trying to sell this could backfire quickly. Rub a bigger company wrong and they will sink you fast.

Linus: The whole advertising industry is built on selling the intangible. 30 seconds of airtime in the Superbowl costs a couple million....That's Two million bucks for what? 30 seconds of AIR!!! But you bring up a good point, the advertiser is not buying the air, they're buying ratings points. And if the ratings points aren't there, they get their spot run again for free until the promised rating is met. It's called a make-good. So if Ernie's crop goes down early or in anyway underperforms, what's the make-good for that? I guess that's the art of the deal between Ernie and the advertiser...Ernie & buyer beware. Interesting concept... Frank

Anyone can open an auction on eBay shall we say selling California Sunshine in a bottle. Set the reserve at ten thousand dollars. One does not have to sell if the reserve is not met. This leaves lots of room and ways for the bid to go right up to nine thousand, nine hundred, ninety nine dollars and ninety nine cents. Oops.........no sale reserve not met but thank you all for the free advertising anyhow. The world would be talking about the dude selling a bottle of California Sunshine while personal image was the issue all along not the sale. :) One could actually pay a few bucks commission to create the illusion that it really did sell. No problem in a faceless, nameless easily worked sale pretending to be a real auction.

Not to knock the effort, I think it's pretty damn cool, however just because something is on the internet does not mean it will be viewed by millions of people... Your ad says it will be seen by millions of people via your webcam. Can you live up to that?

Well all I will say at this point is Stan you hit it right on the head.
I know every one is antsy to get in the patch so when I do come back later tonight I'LL TRY TO KEEP IT CIVIL. But in the mean time go check out the website www.giantveggies.com
Try to read it with BOTH EYES. And Kyle like always get your facts straight before you start stirring your pot. You may even want to read some previous post's to refresh your memory about the seeds and the ones I kept back. Try not to say anything unless you know exactly what is going on, at this point you don't, so just wait. I'LL BE BACK.

Oh come on now Ernie, everyone that knows me knows that I dont give 2 sh1#$ what you do, or how you get money! Nor would I ever waste my time doing something like that. Plus that idea was Gus Smithizler's idea a few years ago to carve the logo in a fruit and let it grow. I just thought this whole thing is one big joke, but if someone is foolish enough to spend money on that, then let them do it.
Be careful what you promise, I doubt your website gets a million hits a year.....

The beautiful thing about this country is that any of us can do most anything we want as long as it is within the law. Ernie has been quite creative and has shown a lot of courage in just trying to survive. He has been sick and down but never really out. He has dealt with a lot of adversity and seems to be moving on. Nothing he has done is illegal though perhaps controversial. For sure some of you don't like it and have been critical. Some have attacked Ernie personally and not just his activities. I applaud Ernie for his efforts and wish him well. He is definitely a survivor and is bent on taking care of his family. Don't you think that for the rest of us it is time to get on with growing some big pumpkins?

Personally I don't think I stirred a pot. You had something on the public domain called E-Bay, I merely posted a link to it... I posted that link and the thread built a life of it's own, it was *your* ad Ernie that stirred things up, not me.

Hmmm....seems if you didn't have anything to hide from the pumpkin community, then you would welcome the increased exposure to your E-Bay ad Ernie, I mean, you *are* trying to make money with it, eh? A little thin-skinned for someone so global.... What's up with that?

You guys are really brutal. What I like about this thread is that everyone seems to be willing to say exactly what they are thinking, right or wrong. You don't get that just everywhere. And you guys seem to be exceptional at detecting bull sh*t when it passes by. Only in America.. Not everyone riding in the elevator is always willing to ask the question of who let the f*rt.

Now thats just not right, Ernie wern't you all destitute and had to sell all your seeds a couple of months ago because of some family disaster? Now you got all this money for electronics and stuff..., and are suddenly growing again with lots of promises that would be tough to keep. I think you have crawled into a "grouping" (along with a couple other posters on this thread) that are using this hobby and the generosity of others to make a buck.
