Ok...maybe I'm a bit of a sadist, but I'm VERY intrigued by the concept of exploding veggies. Anyone have any stories...or better yet PICTURES of theses blown up pumpkins. Maybe this is just an urban legend.
Curious in KC!

Cool pics, but I was thinking about them exploding without the use of TNT! Do they really blow up or just crack?

they just crack. i've never heard them tear open, but i don't sleep in the patch, either. it seems to happen at night, when they grow more

well i had one explode on me... intentionally. we dropped it from 50ft onto the parking lot ...it was supposed to hit a car- but oh well... I wasn't the one who lined it up ... first i removed the seeds and then I added about 10 gallons of water ... so 671 lbs plus water ... i've got a video clip somewhere ?
but Scotty had two blown up on David Letterman... so I think he wins the exploding pumpkin contest.

I could make a case for a blown out blossom end. One day I see it badly cracked. The next day I found it some six feet from the end, of the pumpkin.
If it did not blow out itself it was pulled out by a critter. We do have critters. The smell of fresh pumpkin may have just been to much. We did not see any drunk critters or fat sleeping theifs.
Well I could have claimed the pop stampeeded the horse and so forth. :)

well, they DO blow up with a dull bang. Back in the mid 90's I was really pushing my plants with a custom high fertilizer mixture. Had a big plant and set 6 or so pumpkins, they were volleyball size. Just got done working on the vine one evening and was leaning on the fence admiring the vine when I heard it. I went right to the spot on the vine where it came from, I kinda knew what to expect but coulden't believe it. The pumpkin had blown and was cracked like an egg shell all cracks were about 1/8" wide, just a few minutes before when I was looking at it , it was perfect. I would have never believed it in a million years a pumpkin could blow like that noise and all,but it really did. Must have been a lot of growing pressure in there. It didn't take me long to make my fertilizer blend less potent. All the pumpkins on that vine eventually split.
