MENTOR PROGRAMS WITHIN EACH INDIVIDUAL CLUB CAN BE VERY BENEFICIAL TO ALL PARTIES
AT OUR SEED STARTING PARTY THE SNGPG WILL OFFER A MENTOR PROGRAM TO ANY MEMBER THAT FEELS HE OR SHE WOULD BENEFIT
THESE MEMBERS WILL BE ASSIGNED A PERSON WITHIN THERE AREA THEY CAN WORK WITH THROUGH OUT THE SEASON
AS THIS HOBBY CONTINUES TO GROW THE NEED FOR MENTORS WILL GROW WITH IT ( IN NO SMALL WAY EVERYONE THAT GIVES ADVICE ON THIS WEB PAGE IS PROVIDING A FORM OF MENTORSHIP )
I LIKE TO USE OUR RHODE ISLAND GROWERS AS AN EXAMPLE
IF YOU WENT BACK JUST FIVE YEARS AGO YOU WOULD BE HARD PRESSED TO FIND TWO OR THREE GROWERS THAT HAD THE KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE TO COMPETE AT A HIGH LEVEL LAST YEAR WE HAD GROWERS PLACE FIRST AND SECOND AT TOPSFIELD PLUS TWO MORE IN THE TOP FIFTEEN
WE ALSO HAD TWO HUSBAND AND WIFE TEAMS THAT GREW VERY RESPECTABLE PUMPKINS EACH
TODAY IM PROUD TO SAY " LITTLE RHODE ISLAND " CAN TAKE THEIR PLACE ALONG SIDE OF SOME OF THE BEST GROWERS IN THE COUNTRY
THIS DID NOT HAPPEN BY ACCIDENT FRIENDSHIPS WERE FORMED, INFORMATION WAS SHARED AND THESE NEW GROWERS PUT THE TIME AND EFFORT IN NECESSARY TO BE SUCCESSFUL. ONCE THEIR SKILLS IMPROVED THEY STARTED TO PASS ON WHAT THEY HAD LEARNED TO EVEN MORE NEW GROWERS
THERES NOTHING MORE SATISFING THAN KNOWING YOU HELPED SOMEONE ALONG THE WAY, AND THEY WILL RESPECT YOU FOR TAKING THE TRIP WITH THEM
GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE

Good words Dick.
This really should be the reason to form a growers club in the first place. To find folks of like mind & get them together for mutual benefit.
Mentoring is the fast way to the top in all things. Always has been.

Mentoring is the only way to grow this hobby. Most people know little of the time and effort required to properly care for and grow an Atlantic Giant Pumpkin. Only the most advid gardeners will continue to come back year after year. The benefit for the mentor is the reward of progeny at the end of the season he sees from each of the new growers he has nurtured.

Sounds like a great way to get started. I wish there were some growers around when I started out. I know I grew for 4 years before I meet anyone else growing them. But, since I joined Big Pumpkins, things have improved big time. I like to think that a lot of growers on BP have been my mentors. I've received a lot of help over the last 3 years from different growers on this site. Keep up the good work people.....Phil

you nailed it buddy back in the day information was limited as was the places you could go to get it
thank goodness early on there we growers like jack larue, tony cilleberto and don black that were willing to share and pass on informational letters
it was people of this good character that got us the help we needed
thanks also to the addition of books by howard dill and then don langevin the information highway started to open up
then, once the internet and organizations like b.p.com came on board the highway was complete
to find a solution to a problem or just get information in general used to take days or weeks to accomplish what we can now do in minutes
this is one of the reasons why new growers are now pounding out weights in their first year that were only dreamed about in the past

Dick I just have to echo and agree with what you have just said. I remember back in the early 1990's when i first got interested in our Hobby/Sport and it used to take at least 4 weeks to send a Snail Mail to the USA or canada and then get the reply letter back. As well as growing advice, Seed requests were made in the same way and many hours, and pens, were used to contact fellow Growers worldwide. The advent of the Internet and this Website, as well as a few others, has helped this Hobby/Sport increase in size dramatically.
regards Mike
