Forget the first crocus peeking thru the snow, or the first Robin sighting.Last fall I put on the pumpkin patch 175 leaf bags full of Maple leaves. But the tiller would not start so they were not tilled in.Anyways I went to check under the leaves(checking for some decomposition) and I found moving earthworms.Than I heard a humming sound and looked over the fence to see approximately 500 bees swarming around the neighbors bee hives.Keep in mind that today is one of the warmest this year and its 41 degrees outside.Spring is around the corner, either that than the bees and earthwoms are going to freeze their little butts off.Do earthworms have little butts? Bears up and about for the same reason bees take short early spring flights. Whooooooo Boy had you been snoozing that long you would be up shaking a leg too. :)
Both often go into snooze again for a couple weeks until temperatures start to average a bit warmer. If you see a black bear more than a day or two it would be a male. The females are nursing the cubs born last month. They are to small to come out for another month or so.

I knew winter is ending soon last week because as I was driving South I saw a group of at least 40 Canadian Geese flying North in their V shape. They don't come this early home.

From the song........America: there is reference, to the purple mountain's magistry. This is created, in color as the spring buds begin, to move. The entire grey mountain takes, on a purple hue. This preceeds the green tips emerging, from the buds. Any observant eye can see this change taking place. It begins now and peaks in just a few weeks. Late afternoon in the long rays, of the sun, is the best time, to see it.

Was able to till the north 4 acre field today, no frost in the ground! Very unuseual for this part of the country this early. Yes the Robbins are out and I killed a few jellow jackets too... The patch is quietly waiting, soon, soon...

Yup....weather it is a changin'. We are feeding many birds. They are singing their little hearts out and we have heard (tho' not seen) birds only heard in the spring. On Christmas day, (for the first time ever) we heard birds singing. Usually it is dead quiet around here, it is so cold. In fact one day, it was so cold we saw little sprigs of steam from the finches breath while sitting on the clothesline. No kidding!!! Anyone ever seen that? But on the other hand, the cold did not last more than a week or two. It is supposed to be 46 F tomorrow and rain! I will keep a look out for those wild geese. Has anyone heard from Giant Veggies? I sent a bubble pack a couple months ago to him and sent an email but have't heard a word. I still have seed sent me last year so I am not panicing. Just hoped to try a new cross. Well happy Valentines day!

We got snow last night, probably over an inch. How is that for signs of spring? I don't even bother thinking about it until March. (only two weeks!)

First sign of spring here is the return of the red winged blackbirds. Haven't seen them yet. Should be in the next couple of weeks.
