I let the plant "Tell Me" how big it needs to be based up on the current weather patterns along with my stupid grower mistakes I seem to inflict upon it... So far 834* in about 1100 sq ft is my best, but again I seem to continualy over compensate for the weather and make too many fert/pruning mistakes LOL!

Ron & Dick's anomoly was 919.6 lbs harvested for a 9-22 weigh-off (Durham). After losing the main when the fruit was 100 lbs, the pumpking grew to finish on 125 sq ft of main & secondary vines. The fruit was grown on their 1068 Wallace '03 x 500 Wallace '03.

The 1027 was grown on a 1230 daletas plant which was grown on a plant that was part of an experiment where I divided a 30 x 30 site into quarters. 900/4 so 225 sqft. Oddly enough, the 906, 825, 840 also came off of plants in this one site. 3598 pounds, one on each of four plants in a 30 x 30 area.

if u had a small plant, wouldnt u half to have healthy green and big leaves to produce a nice fruit and nice weather. i just dont want to have too small of a plant for type of seeds i have and not give enough plant to get the most growth out of the fruit

Are we talking 100 sq. ft of soil or total plant area? Must be soil....

My 873.5 was grown on 250 square feet of plant...the main vine broke off just beyond the fruit that had set a few days before.

this is what I did. I took all of the pumpkins over 1,000 lbs and plots the number versus the plant size. I used AGGC data. those that didn't have a size given were not included. This is what I came up with.

SOOOOO ... it looks like we should grow 650 sq ft plants ... or 400 sq ft plants ! it is interesting to me that there are two spikes in the data ... I'm still trying to figure out if one is better than the other.

this should be a more stable link ...

maybe this ratio could be used to find the ideal size for a particular seed ?

gordan, the only reason I htink there is more 600 sq ft plants is because that was the old practice and still is the common practice. I think a 400 to 500 sq ft plant has the same amount of potential. Jack La Rue's plants this year were 400 sq ft.

Ben- I know that Jacks are 400 sq ft ... and his sucess makes it VERY tempting to go that small doesn't it !!! right now I have 4 at 550 ... I could easily go to 5 at 440 sq ft each. so I am considering that. But I felt I was really sucessful last year with what I did. AND a lot of growers still use 600-700 sq ft and are VERY succesful at it
to me it was just interesting to see the two spikes ... not both ends tapered to a single middle spike. I guess that was what I was expecting when I collected the data ... the trend is definately smaller ... 5-10 years ago 1,000 sq ft was the minimum recomended area and 2,000 was better !
