who has used chicken manure? Lots of chicken houses here...It is composted with wood shavings...Would it have to much nitrogen,,would wood shavings break down fast? Would be the easiest to get hold of..Found a dairy farm also,,but cow manure gets washed into a lagoon each day,,so any cow manure which is gotton would be soupy..What to do,what to do..March is only 1 1/4 months away......

Jeff,

I think Stelts used something like 18 dump truck loads the year he grew his 1140! Fresh chicken crap is very "hot",only use it after being aged or composted!

It is HOT indeed… it almost cooked my plant in my second season (I was obviously over enthusiastic). The soil was so hot that you could not put your hand in it! T was at least 70°C.
Otherwise it is very good to improve poor soil.

On a 1000 sq. foot patch Spring application would be a five gallon bucket full sprinkled into the nusery and another five gallons sprinkled over the path of the main vine proposed.

Any amount you wish may go into the compost pile with browns added when and if it gets to hot. By fall using trial and error in the compost you should have a dandy well composted total pile. At this point your hot chiken poop would be almost fully composted and now safe to use any reasonable amount with your new other animal manures going into fall prep.

That very small amount of fresh chicken poop will do a lot for your spring prep to support good fungi development and maintenance. Never a heavy spring amount of fresh anything. Finished compost may go on anytime and in any reasonable amount.

...also, the wood shavings, if plentiful, will end up using(depleting) quite a bit of nitrogen in their rather lengthy breakdown. BF

Hey Jeff, what you need to do is to sneek over to Pappy's patch and steal some of his rabbit sh*t. <:^}>

Just be careful, not just for your patch, but for yourself. the amonia can be over powering.

My Fall Prep, I added a Load of 1 year old composted Chicken / Goat Manure mix to my 15x15 ( home patch )
and also grabed a load of fresh chicken manure and piled
it into the compost pile.

I put 15m3 over 200sq m straight out of the chicken sheds power harrow in then planted straight after with mustard.
The mustard grew something amazing. It worked out to this in kilos of fert applied.
270kg N
90kg P
120 kg K
2.4 kg S
150kg Ca
2.7 kg Mg
2.9 kg sodium
plu strace elements of mangenese, copper, zinc, boron, iron.
So i think give it heaps but you need to do it in autumn to give the Nitrogen I chance to burn off.

I have been looking locally for a product called Cockadoodle doo that Ned used last year in his patch. With Ned's success, it must be good stuff. Check it out at http://www.bigpumpkins.com/Diary/DiaryViewOne.asp?eid=17430

1 bag covers 2500 sq. ft. so it must be pretty potent stuff.

Anyone seen it sold in Canada?
