Since this pumpkin was weighed in a week before the Emmons does that mean it was a world record holder for a week?

technically......i would say yes......BUT i wonder if instead of weighing off at topsfield, if he would have weighed off a week later when Geneva did, if he would have actually beaten her.

I heard it was still growing 2-3lbs a day when picked. keep in mind it was 200lbs heavier than expected, so it was...if I might be so bold....just another really big pumpkin. What I mean is new world record aspirations with the info at the time would be a real stretch, at 1060ish lbs it wasn't near the 1140 record and with runors of really-really-really big ones in large numbers the local event would be my choice.I mean, most people in the know knew of pretty reliable rumors of a giant out of Tony C's patch...big stuff from N.H. and I dont know how many hours ride from where Craig is to the GPC local-est event. You make your decisions and live with the results...i mean, who really thought there's be 3-4 1200lbers last year?

Craig Weir's fruit might have been lighter a week later. Just because it appeared to be getting slightly larger does not mean it was getting heavier. A fruit's job is to mature its seeds. Once that is accomplished, the pumpkins innerts begin to dry up. Innerts from an immature split 500 pound fruit will fill a 5 gallon bucket. In October the innerts (with seeds) will sometime only fill a 1 gallon bucket..........Several years ago I put a Burpee Prizewinner that weighed about 180 pounds on a scale in the field. It only stayed at its peak weight for about 5 days and then began losing weight and the vine was still green.

Yes....interesting observation, and possible based upon your experiments.Anything can happen...vandals splits, rot etc....its all a gamble. If the pumpkin measurements were showing a 2-3lb per day increase then I would still assume its growing. Did the prizewinner still show increased size per day while losing weight? THAT would be scarry.............G

That would be horrible if you thought your pumpkin was gaining weight but it was really loosing...just another grower's nightmare. Thanks for the replies.

LIpumpkin, I can handle the fact that nature can and doe's throw us split, and even rot, but vandalism is something I don't understand. I had a grower friend of mine who gave seeds to his neighbor, and coached him along. Naturaly my friend who had been growing for 20 years had a larger pumpkin than his neighbour in early Sept. Well my friend went out early the morning of the County fair and there in the middle of his best patch caught his neighbor red handed sabotaging his fair pumpkin. I just don't know what to make of some folks. Old Mr.Critchfield still grows pumpkins and let's me grow one or two on his farm with him, but now he refuses to help any new growers. Sad but true story
